Internet Crime Complaint Center Virus

Also Known As: Internet Crime Complaint Center Ransomware
Damage level: Severe

What is Internet Crime Complaint Center?

The Internet Crime Complaint Center message, stating that computer users' PCs are locked due to law violations, is a scam. This is a ransomware infection created by Cyber criminals to trick unsuspecting PC users into paying a bogus fine for supposed law infringements.

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has no connection with this message - this screen locker was developed by cyber criminals in order to steal money from PC users. In order to scare PC users into believing that this message is legitimate ('threat of prosecution reminder'), cyber criminals exploit the name and graphics of an authority (in this case, IC3).

Internet Crime Complaint Center virus

Previous variants of these ransomware infections exploited the names of the Metropolitan Police, FBI, Interpol etc. No international authorities use screen lockers to collect fines for law infringements. Furthermore, most ransomware infections are localized.

Cyber criminals translate their deceptive messages into various languages, thus the same ransomware infection can be displayed with languages and graphics pertaining to the location of computer. This localization is made possible by detection of the IP address associated with the targeted PC. The Internet Crime Complaint Center virus is distributed using drive-by downloads and Trojan infections.

Commonly, cyber criminals exploit security vulnerabilities within users' PCs to proliferate their deceptive ransomware infections. To avoid these infections, PC users should keep their operating system and installed software up-to-date. Best computer security practices include the use of legitimate antivirus and anti-spyware programs.

If your computer is already infected with the Internet Crime Complaint Center virus, ignore the message and eliminate it from your computer. Do not pay the fine - you will lose your money and your computer will remain blocked.

In order to collect the bogus fines, cyber criminals use Green Dot MoneyPak prepaid cards, and unlike credit cards, you will be unable to dispute or cancel your transaction using these services. Moreover, money transaction methods such as these, make tracking cyber criminals problematic for the genuine authorities.

Any statements pertaining to video and voice recordings within the text are as fake as the message itself. Use the removal guide provided to eliminate the Internet Crime Complaint Center virus.
