Rango XP Antivirus 2014

Also Known As: Rango XP Antivirus 2014 scam
Damage level: High

What is Rango XP Antivirus 2014?

Rango XP Antivirus 2014 is a fake security scanner originating from a family of fake antivirus programs called Braviax/FakeRean. Cyber criminals responsible for releasing this scam hope that computer users will fall for the trickery displayed by this fake software and purchase the license key.

When Rango XP Antivirus 2014 infiltrates PCs via detected security vulnerabilities, it imitates the behavior of a legitimate antivirus program and then generates a large list of supposedly-detected malware and viruses. Do not trust this detection list - it is a scam. None of the security infections indicated by Rango XP Antivirus 2014 actually exist on your computer.

To make the false detection list appear more realistic, this rogue program also blocks execution of all installed programs and generates fake security warning pop-ups. These messages state that the user's PC is at risk and that the only solution is to purchase Rango XP Antivirus 2014.

Do not purchase this program under any circumstances - cyber criminals will gain access to your banking information, which could lead to further money thefts.

Rogue programs from the Braviax/FakeRean family are capable of changing their names according to the infected operating system. For example, Rango XP Antivirus 2014 rogue on a computer using the Windows 7 operating system appears as Rango Win 7 Antivirus 2014.

As with all rogue antivirus programs from the Braviax family, Rango XP Antivirus 2014 is distributed using security vulnerabilities detected on PCs. Other methods used to proliferate this rogue software include displaying fake online security warning messages, using Trojans, and drive-by downloads.

If you observe Rango XP Antivirus 2014 scanning your computer for security infections, you are dealing with fake antivirus software that should not be trusted.

The correct way to deal with this program is to eliminate it from your PC. To avoid security infections such as these, use legitimate antivirus and antispyware programs and keep your operating system and installed software up-to-date (Flash, Java, etc.) This makes infiltration of your computer more difficult for cyber criminals.

Examples of fake security warning messages displayed by Rango XP Antivirus 2014:

“System security threat was detected. Viruses and/or spyware may be damaging your system now. Prevent infection and data loss or stealing by running a free security scan”

Other tools known to remove Rango XP Antivirus 2014:

Summary:

The fake antivirus programs (also known as "rogue antivirus programs" or "scareware") are applications that tries to lure computer users into paying for their non-existent full versions to remove the supposedly detected security infections (although the computer is actually clean). These bogus programs are created by cyber criminals who design them to look as legitimate antivirus software. Most commonly rogue antivirus programs infiltrate user's computer using poop-up windows or alerts which appear when users surf the Internet. These deceptive messages trick users into downloading a rogue antivirus program on their computers. Other known tactics used to spread scareware include exploit kits, infected email messages, online ad networks, drive-by downloads, or even direct calls to user's offering free support.

A computer that is infected with a fake antivirus program might also have other malware installed on it as rogue antivirus programs often are bundled with Trojans and exploit kits. Noteworthy that additional malware that infiltrates user's operating system remains on victim's computer regardless of whether a payment for a non-existent full version of a fake antivirus program is made. Here are some examples of fake security warning messages that are used in fake antivirus distribution:

Computer users who are dealing with a rogue security software shouldn't buy it's full version. By paying for a license key of a fake antivirus program users would send their money and banking information to cyber criminals. Users who have already entered their credit card number (or other sensitive information) when asked by such bogus software should inform their credit card company that they have been tricked into buying a rogue security software. • Alerts asking to upgrade to a paid version of a program to remove the supposedly detected malware.
  • Slow computer performance.
  • Disabled Windows updates.
