How to remove MacRepair from Mac computers

What is MacRepair?

The MacRepair app can supposedly scan Mac computers for junk files and potential performance problems. In fact, this app is advertised through various deceptive, scam websites. Neither websites of this kind nor software advertised through them can be trusted. For this reason, MacRepair is classified as potentially unwanted application (PUA).

MacRepair scam

MacRepair includes tools such as RAM booster, uninstaller, duplicates finder, malware cleaner, and so on. It supposedly cleans unnecessary, junk files, uninstalls unwanted software, removes malware and performs other actions, however, to use these features, users must activate it by purchasing a 'full version'. Note that PUAs often provide fake results and do not fix any errors, clean files, or remove malware. By designing these apps to 'detect' bogus problems, developers seek to trick people into paying for their software (activation). It is unknown whether MacRepair generates fake results, but since it is a PUA, this is very likely. Furthermore, apps that are distributed through scam or other untrustworthy websites should never be trusted. Most PUAs are distributed through the download and installation set-ups of other (usually free) software. Developers of MacRepair might distribute this app through deceptive web pages and also various software set-ups. These set-ups often contain more than one PUA, and thus MacRepair could be distributed together with browser hijackers, adware, and other PUAs. You are advised to uninstall all PUAs immediately and avoid them in future.

MacRepair is one of many apps that are untrusted and distributed using questionable methods. Other examples are Total Mac Care, MacCleansePro and Qbit Mac Optimizer. Typically, these apps supposedly operate as system optimization tools, however, most are advertised through rogue pages and/or distributed through the set-ups of other software. Many are useless and designed only to extort money from users. For these reasons, remove apps of this type from your system.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

Generally, people do not download or install unwanted apps intentionally. These unwanted downloads/installs might be caused accidentally by clicking deceptive ads, which download and/or install unwanted software by running certain scripts, or when users download/install other programs without checking settings available in the set-ups. Developers often distribute unwanted apps by including them into the download or installation set-ups of regular software, and present them as additional offers. Typically, these offers are hidden in settings such as "Custom", "Advanced", and so on. Unfortunately, many people fail to check or change the settings, thereby unintentionally allowing PUAs to be downloaded and installed together with regular software.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

Programs and files should be downloaded from official websites and via direct download links. Other channels such as unofficial pages, Peer-to-Peer networks (torrent clients, eMule, etc.), third party downloaders, etc., should not be trusted. Check all settings that are available in download or installation set-ups and deselect offers to download/install unwanted software. Do not click intrusive ads that are displayed on dubious websites. They usually redirect to dubious websites or cause unwanted downloads/installations. If the browser displays unwanted advertisements and/or opens untrustworthy websites automatically, remove all unwanted, dubious apps (extensions, plug-ins or add-ons) that are installed and see if the problem persists. Also remove programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
