How to remove unwanted apps that promote allow-to-continue.com and similar sites

Also Known As: Ads by allow-to-continue.com
Damage level: Medium

What is allow-to-continue[.]com?

Websites such as allow-to-continue[.]com should not be trusted or visited - they are designed to open other sites of this kind or load dubious content. There are many websites that function in a similar way. Some examples are go4news[.]biz, dabluehole[.]com and equiposeguridadindustrial[.]com.

Generally, users do not visit these sites intentionally - they are opened by potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) that are installed on browsers and/or computers. Commonly, apps of this type serve advertisements and collect data.

PUAs promote sites such as allow-to-continue[.]com by opening them in a new browser window or tab. They then open about two or three other bogus web pages or display dubious content - this depends on the geolocations of their visitors.

Like most websites of this type, allow-to-continue[.]com uses a 'clickbait' technique to deceive visitors into clicking the "Allow" button in a pop-up window displayed by a browser. Note that allow-to-continue[.]com displays a progress bar with a percentage suggesting that it can fully loaded only by clicking the aforementioned button.

If users click the button, they allow for the websites to show notifications. Generally, notifications by pages such as allow-to-continue[.]com contain deceptive ads, links to untrusted websites, etc. Therefore, never give permission to show notifications. PUAs also serve ads such as coupons, pop-ups, surveys, banners and others.

The ads can open dubious web pages or even execute scripts to download and install unwanted applications. PUAs can also record browsing-related data such as addresses of visited pages, entered search queries, IP addresses, and geolocations. They can also collect sensitive information.

The developers misuse the data to generate revenue. For example, they might sell it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). This can lead to problems relating to online privacy, browsing safety and, in some cases, users may even become victims of identity theft.

In summary, users do not visit pages such as allow-to-continue[.]com intentionally, they arrive at such pages because some installed PUA forces them to. Apps of this type should not be installed - they are useless to their uses and can cause various problems.

I.e., most PUAs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers. If some PUA is already installed on the browser and/or computer, then it should be removed.

How did adware install on my computer?

PUAs are often downloaded/installed together with other products. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".

By rushing through download/installation of software (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using "Quick/Express" settings, etc.) many users risk unintentionally allowing bundled content into their devices. Intrusive advertisements proliferate PUAs as well.

When clicked, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without users' permission. Some PUAs have "official" download web pages from which they can be downloaded.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.

When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on. Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others).

If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?

Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.

Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
