The FreePDFCombiner application supposedly offers conversion to and from various file formats (DOC, PDF, TXT, and so on) directly from the web browser.

Maxi Buy is a rogue application that falsely claims to save time and money when shopping online by providing coupons and notifications of special deals/discounts available on web stores. Judging on appearance alone, Maxi Buy may seem legitimate and useful, however, this app is categorized as a browser hijacker and a potentially unwanted application (PUA).

Three main reasons for these negative associations are: 1) infiltration without users' consent; 2) tracking of browsing activity, and; 3) display of intrusive advertisements.

Scarab-Hitler Ransomware

What is Scarab-Hitler?

Discovered by Amigo-A, Scarab-Hitler is a new variant of a ransomware-type virus called Scarab. Immediately after infiltration, Scarab-Hitler encrypts most stored data and renames files using the "[random_letters_and_digits].hitler" filename pattern. For example, "sample.jpg" might be renamed to a filename such as "AK4gaO331lX8gk21pHm1a.hitler".

Encrypted data becomes unusable and indistinguishable. As well as encryption, Scarab-Hitler also generates a text file ("HOW TO RECOVER ENCRYPTED FILES.TXT") and places a copy in each existing folder.

"Apple Recent Purchase Email Virus" is a spam email campaign similar to AT&T Invoice Email Virus, Here Is Your Fax Email Virus, and many others. This campaign is used to proliferate a trojan-type virus called Hancitor.

Suri Ransomware

What is Suri?

First discovered by MalwareHunterTeam, Suri is a high-risk virus based on ransomware called "Stupid". This virus is designed to encrypt most stored files and adds the ".SLAV" appendix to the name of each affected file (e.g., "sample.jpg" is renamed to "sample.jpg.SLAV").

Once encrypted, data immediately becomes unusable. After infiltration, Suri changes the desktop wallpaper and opens a pop-up window. Both contain a ransom-demand message.

AppleCare Tech Support POP-UP Scam (Mac)

What is AppleCare Tech Support?

"AppleCare Tech Support" is another fake error message delivered by various deceptive websites. Most visitors arrive at these sites inadvertently - they are redirected by potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) or intrusive advertisements delivered by other rogue sites.

Research shows that many potentially unwanted applications infiltrate systems without permission. As well as causing redirects, they deliver intrusive advertisements and gather sensitive information.

BoostPC Adware

What is BoostPC?

BoostPC is a dubious application that supposedly allows users to change various system settings (e.g, volume, brightness, and so on). Initially, BoostPC may seem legitimate and useful, however, it is categorized as a potentially unwanted application (PUA) and adware.

There are three main reasons for these negative associations: 1) stealth installation without users' consent; 2) tracking of browsing activity, and; 3) display of intrusive advertisements.
