Homeburu.xyz POP-UP Redirect (Mac)

Also Known As: homeburu.xyz pop-up
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is homeburu.xyz?

homeburu.xyz is a deceptive website designed to cause redirects to a number of other untrustworthy (potentially, malicious) websites. It is very similar to identies.com, redirectoptimizer.com, mobiprofit.com, and others.

Research shows that users often arrive at homeburu.xyz inadvertently - they are redirected by potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) or intrusive advertisements delivered by other rogue sites. Intrusive advertisements typically infiltrate systems without users’ permission.

As well as causing redirects, potentially unwanted programs deliver intrusive advertisements and gather sensitive information.

homeburu.xyz adware

After successful infiltration, potentially unwanted programs open new browser tabs/windows and redirect to homeburu.xyz Immediately after visiting this site, users encounter a number of consecutive redirects to other dubious websites. There is a high probability that at least one of these websites will contain malicious content.

Therefore, redirects to/from homeburu.xyz might lead to various computer infections. With regard to deceptive websites, potentially unwanted programs deliver intrusive ads that might also lead to malicious sites and execute scripts that stealthily download/install malware. Therefore, even a single click can result in high-risk computer infections.

Note that intrusive ads are delivered using tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, they often conceal underlying content, significantly diminishing the browsing experience. Another important issue is information tracking.

Research shows that many PUPs gather sensitive information. The list of collected data typically includes website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and so on.

This information often includes personal details, and malicious use can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to eliminate all potentially unwanted programs immediately.

There are dozens of rogue applications, all of which are very similar. By offering "useful features", potentially unwanted programs attempt to give the impression of legitimacy, however, these programs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.

Rather than delivering any real value for regular users, they gather sensitive information, deliver intrusive advertisements and, in some cases, cause unwanted redirects. In this way, PUPs pose a direct threat to your privacy and Internet browsing safety.

How did potentially unwanted programs install on my computer?

A small percentage of PUPs have official download/promotion websites, however, due to the lack of knowledge and careless behavior of many users, PUPs are likely to infiltrate systems without users’ permission. Research shows that developers proliferate them using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" and intrusive advertisements.

"Bundling" is essentially stealth installation of PUPs together with regular software. Developers hide "bundled" applications within "Custom/Advanced" settings (or other sections) of the download/installation processes - they do not disclose these installations properly.

Furthermore, many users are likely to rush these procedures and skip steps. In addition, they click advertisements without understanding the consequences. This behavior often leads to inadvertent installation of PUPs - users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

To prevent this situation, be very cautious when browsing the Internet and downloading/installing software. Bear in mind that intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, but most lead to dubious websites (gambling, adult dating, pornography, etc.) Continually encountering these ads indicates a potential adware infection.

Therefore, you should immediately eliminate all dubious applications and browser plug-ins. In addition, carefully analyze each window of the download/installation dialogs and cancel all additionally-included programs. We advise you to download programs from official sources only, using direct download links.

Third party downloaders/installers are monetized via the "bundling" method, and thus these tools should not be used. The key to computer safety is caution. If your computer is already infected with rogue apps, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
