Archive Manager Unwanted Application (Mac)

Also Known As: Archive Manager potentially unwanted application
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is "Archive Manager"?

The Archive Manager tool (application) is designed to manage ZIP and RAR files. It allows users to compress files and folders in multiple formats, and also to extract them.

This may seem a useful and easy-to-use tool, however, it is classified as a potentially unwanted application (PUA), since developers promote and distribute it using the "bundling" method. Therefore, most users install this PUA inadvertently. Examples of other apps of this type are PDF King and ZipRar.

Once installed and opened, Archive Manager displays a simple window containing two sections: one for file compression; the other for extracting files. There is also a button to add files for these processes. Despite these functions, Archive Manager can be only be used for a limited time - users must purchase the 'full version' to use it without any limits.

Many apps are promoted using the "bundling" method in this way -  they provide no features unless the full version is purchased. System optimizers, for example, display fake scan results (they detect fake issues, errors, and so on) simply to trick users into buying full versions of certain products. Generally, most PUAs distributed using "bundling" cannot be trusted.

Furthermore, this method is often used to proliferate more than one PUA. For example, browser hijackers and adware-type apps might also be downloaded/installed - these apps modify browser settings, deliver intrusive advertisements, collect browsing-related (and other) data, etc.

If installed, they might cause problems relating to browsing safety, privacy, browsing quality, and so on. Furthermore, Archive Manager is known to promote the search.bilabordnet.com fake search engine.

Therefore, once installed, this app makes changes to browser settings by assigning search.bilabordnet.com as the default search engine (and possibly, the new tab URL and homepage). You can read more about this fake search engine in this article.

PUAs are often promoted as 'useful tools', however, users are often tricked into downloading and installing them. Once installed, they provide none of the functionality promised. Most are designed only to generate revenue for the developers by various means.

They pose a direct threat to your privacy and browsing safety, and often cause unwanted redirects, deliver ads, track browsing-related information, and so on.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

Archive Manager is promoted on its official website, from which it can be downloaded and installed, however, users mostly install PUAs inadvertently when software developers use the "bundling" method. This method is used to trick people into downloading/installing unwanted apps together with regular software.

This is achieved by hiding PUAs in "Custom", "Advanced" and other settings of the download/installation setups. The presence of these apps often goes unnoticed, since users rush or skip download/installation steps.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Pay close attention when browsing the web and downloading and installing software. Avoid downloading software from unofficial websites or other untrustworthy sources such as third party software downloaders, installers, peer-to-peer networks, and so on. Do not skip download/installation steps without carefully studying them first.

Check available "Custom", "Advanced" and other settings/options. Deselect unwanted applications and only then finish the process. Note that online advertisements often seem legitimate, but, once clicked, commonly redirect users to untrustworthy websites such as gambling, pornography, adult dating, etc.

If you continuously encounter redirects to untrustworthy websites, check your browser for any unwanted/unknown extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins.

Eliminate dubious entries immediately and apply this to suspicious programs installed on your operating system. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
