getmackeepersoftpro[.]xyz scam

As we mentioned in the introduction, at the time of the research getmackeepersoftpro[.]xyz offered to download and install Hotspot Shield Free VPN Proxy & Wi-Fi Security. According to this website, this app helps to keep data safe when users browse and share information on the web. Also, it should prevent browsers from opening malicious, phishing and other unsafe mobile websites, and secure details like credit card numbers and other personal information when users log into various websites (like banking accounts). However, it is possible that getmackeepersoftpro[.]xyz could be used to advertise other potentially unwanted applications as well. For example, browser hijackers, adware-type apps, or other potentially unwanted software. Either way, software should not be downloaded from getmackeepersoftpro[.]xyz or other similar websites.

Adware is a type of software that is designed serve intrusive ads (like coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups, etc.). In most cases people who click those ads get redirected to various untrustworthy pages or they allow them to execute scripts that cause downloads and/or installations of some unwanted application. Browser hijackers are PUAs that usually are designed to change certain browser's settings so that users would be forced to visit and/or use some fake search engine. Also, most of them collect various data related to user's browsing habits. For example, IP addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, geolocations, and so on. In some cases browser hijackers can be designed to collect personal details as well. Having adware and/or browser hijackers installed may lead to more unwanted installations, problems related to browsing safety, privacy, or even identity theft. Therefore, PUAs should never be downloaded and installed. If an app of this type is already installed on a browser and/or operating system, then it should be removed as soon as possible.

More examples of untrustworthy pages that are designed to advertise questionable software are mobile-apple[.]club, vpnprotectplus[.]com and vpnshieldplus2[.]com. What all these pages have in common is that people usually do not visit them intentionally. As we mentioned in the first paragraph, websites of this type usually get opened through deceptive ads, untrustworthy pages or by installed PUAs.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

Very often people download and install browser hijackers or other PUAs through setups of other software. Quite often apps of this type are included in various download and installation setups, information about it usually can be found in settings like "Custom", "Advanced" and so on. Unfortunately, many people do not check these settings and by leaving them unchanged they allow for PUAs to be downloaded or installed together with some other, wanted software. This marketing method is known as "bundling". Additionally, unwanted downloads or installations can be caused by clicking deceptive advertisements: some ads (if clicked) run scripts that lead to unwanted downloads or even installations.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

We recommend to download all software from official websites and via direct links. It is not safe to do that by using torrent clients, eMule (and other Peer-to-Peer networks), third party downloaders, unofficial websites and other channels of this kind. The same applies to installations through third party installers. Furthermore, we advise to always check all settings like "Advanced", "Custom" that are (if are) included in any download or installation setup and decline offers to download and/or install unwanted software. Also, it is not safe to click intrusive ads, especially if they are shown on shady websites. Those ads usually open untrustworthy websites, or cause unwanted downloads, installations. If there are any unwanted, suspicious apps (extensions, add-ons or plug-ins) installed on a browser, then they should be removed as soon as possible. The same should be to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
