How to uninstall applications that open clk2win.com and similar web pages

Also Known As: Ads by clk2win.com
Damage level: Medium

What is clk2win[.]com?

clk2win[.]com is one of many rogue websites that display dubious content or redirect visitors to other untrusted, potentially malicious sites. Examples include qbirix[.]com, secret-video.online and cmilg[.]pro. They are usually opened by potentially unwanted apps (PUAs) installed on browsers or operating systems.

Most apps of this type force browsers to open dubious websites (including clk2win[.]com and others), collect information relating to users' browsing habits and display advertisements.

clk2win[.]com pop-up redirects

When installed, PUAs routinely open sites such as clk2win[.]com in new browser windows or tabs. When opened/visited, these sites display dubious content or open about two or three other untrusted websites. These actions depend on the geolocations of visitors.

This particular website asks permission to show notifications. We advise against allowing pages such as clk2win[.]com to show notifications. If allowed, they display notifications that contain deceptive ads, links to untrusted pages, and so on. Most of these websites attempt to deceive visitors into allowing them to show notifications using 'clickbait' techniques.

The clk2win[.]com page suggests that it will load a video if visitors click the "Allow" (or "Allow Notifications") button. Furthermore, most PUAs operate as information tracking tools. They collect user-system information relating to users' browsing habits. For example, geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited websites, IP addresses and other data.

Developers sell the data to third parties who misuse it to generate revenue. They might also sell it to cyber criminals and the collected data could include sensitive, personal information. PUAs tend to display intrusive advertisements - they feed users with coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups and other forms of ads.

People who click these are usually redirected to untrusted, potentially malicious websites, or they allow the ads to run scripts designed to download or install unwanted, potentially malicious applications.

Apps of this type should never be downloaded or installed, since they could cause problems relating to online privacy, browsing safety, and some users might also become victims of identity theft.

Typically, these apps are advertised as useful and legitimate. They supposedly deliver various features or other value, however, most PUAs are useless and cause only problems. They are designed to help developers to generate revenue by forcing users to visit websites, delivering advertisements and gathering data.

How did adware install on my computer?

Most users download or install PUAs unintentionally. Typically, apps of this type are installed with other, regular software. I.e., when they are included into the download or installation set-ups and presented as additional offers, which are hidden in "Custom", "Advanced" and other settings.

This distribution method of potentially unwanted apps is called "bundling", a deceptive method that developers use to trick people into downloading and/or installing unwanted software through the set-ups of other, regular software. They succeed when people download and install software without checking and changing the aforementioned settings.

Additionally, unwanted downloads and installations can be caused by clicking deceptive advertisements that execute certain scripts.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

Do not download or install software using third party downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks such as torrent clients, eMule, unofficial websites, and so on. All programs should be downloaded from official websites and through direct download links.

Check all download and installation settings such as "Advanced" and Custom". They often mention offers to download or install additional software, which you can decline. Do not click intrusive ads that are shown on dubious web pages. When clicked, they can redirect to potentially malicious websites or download and install PUAs.

Browsers can be prevented from causing redirects to dubious pages and showing unwanted ads by uninstalling unknown, suspicious plug-ins, add-ons and extensions. In some cases, it is also necessary to uninstall programs of this kind from the operating system.

If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?

Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.

Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
