Avoid downloading dubious content promoted by safariosso-aplosso.com

Also Known As: safariosso-aplosso.com pop-up
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is safariosso-aplosso[.]com?

safariosso-aplosso[.]com is a scam website that promotes untrusted/malicious software using deceptive methods. There are several versions of this scam running on safariosso-aplosso[.]com. In short, visitors to this page are informed that their device is infected or at risk.

They are then instructed to download/install nonoperational, unwanted or malicious content. Few users enter such websites intentionally - typically they are redirected to them by intrusive advertisements or Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) already infiltrated into the browser/system.

safariosso-aplosso[.]com scam

The scams of safariosso-aplosso[.]com are primarily designed to target iPhone users, however, the site might be accessed (redirected to) by other Apple devices. One variant of this scheme claims that the user's iPhone has been infected with malware and its battery has already suffered damage.

If the malicious software is not eliminated immediately, it might result in further damage. To fix this fake infection, users are urged to press the button presented beneath the message and install a free anti-virus tool from the AppStore. Once this app is run, it will allegedly eliminate all malware and repair the device.

Another variant states that the user's internet connection might have been compromised. Therefore, they are advised to install a free VPN from the AppStore to secure the connection. Firstly, users must tap the "Download" button and install the application. Secondly, they are to open and run the installed app.

Note that no site can detect threats/issues present on devices, and any that make such claims are scams and cannot be trusted.

Downloading/Installing or purchasing applications promoted on safariosso-aplosso[.]com or other deceptive web pages is expressly advised against. Software promoted using these dubious tactics can cause serious issues and endanger device/user safety.

PUAs can force-open deceptive/scam sites, and they also cause redirects to sale-based, untrusted, rogue, compromised and malicious pages. These unwanted applications also have additional, dangerous capabilities.

They can deliver intrusive ads (e.g. pop-ups, banners, coupons, etc.), which diminish the browsing experience, redirect to dangerous websites and stealthily download/install content (e.g. PUAs). Another type can modify browsers and restrict or deny access to settings.

Regardless of their other capabilities, most PUAs can track data. These apps can record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect users' personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). This sensitive data is often shared with third parties seeking to misuse it for financial gain - potentially, by putting it to criminal use.

While PUAs tend to appear legitimate and offer "useful" functions, the features promised are usually nonoperational. PUAs can cause various infiltration and infections, lead to serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. To protect device integrity and user safety, remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

maztek.xyz, Vpnshieldplus4.com, safari-protection.com are some examples of other deceptive web pages similar to safariosso-aplosso[.]com. Online scams use social engineering and scare tactics to encourage visitors into performing specific actions.

For example, users can be tricked into downloading/installing or purchasing nonfunctional, untrusted or malicious software, calling fake and expensive support/service lines, revealing personal/financial information, making monetary transactions and so on.

Some popular scam models are warnings that the device is infected or at risk, a piece of essential software is outdated or missing, prize giveaways, etc. The only purpose of these scams is to generate profit for their designers. Therefore, exercise caution when browsing.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

Some PUAs have "official" download pages, which are often promoted by deceptive/scam sites. These applications also proliferate via the download/installation set-ups of other products. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing normal software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".

Rushing download and installation processes (e.g. skipping steps and sections, etc.) endangers systems with potential infiltration and infections. When clicked, intrusive advertisements can execute scripts to download/install PUAs, without users' consent.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

You are advised to research all products prior to download/installation or purchase. All downloads should be performed from official and verified sources. Free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule, etc.) and other third party downloaders are untrusted and can offer likewise suspect content.

When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features and so on. Intrusive ads may seem legitimate and harmless, however, they can redirect to dubious web pages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating and others).

If you encounter these ads/redirects, inspect the device and eliminate all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
