How to remove apps that open mylot.com

Also Known As: Ads by mylot.com
Damage level: Medium

What is mylot[.]com ?

Typically, users arrive at mylot[.]com and similar sites after clicking deceptive advertisements, visiting bogus web pages, or when potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) are installed on browsers and/or operating systems. In any case, users do not often visit these sites intentionally.

Some examples of other pages similar to mylot[.]com are ahacdn[.]me, rex-news[.]org and samizdat-philosophy[.]com.

Once visited, websites such as mylot[.]com load dubious content or open other (about 2-3) untrusted pages. What happens next depends on visitors' geolocations. Commonly, these web pages use 'clickbait' techniques to trick visitors into clicking the "Allow" button, which then allows visited websites to show their notifications.

This particular page suggests that is will be loaded only when visitors click the "Allow" button. Allowing these pages to show notifications is not advised, since they can contain deceptive ads, links to other dubious pages, etc. Pages such as mylot[.]com are promoted by PUAs, which serve coupons, surveys, banners, pop-ups and other types of ads.

These can open untrusted pages or even execute scripts designed to cause download/installation of unwanted apps. Furthermore, PUAs can track and record information such as IP addresses, geolocations, addresses of visited websites, and entered search queries.

In some cases, PUAs are capable of accessing/collecting private, sensitive details as well. The data could be sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) or misused to generate in other ways. In such cases, users could experience problems relating to online privacy, web browsing safety, and they might even become victims of identity theft.

In summary, if a browser opens mylot[.]com or other untrusted pages automatically, it is very likely that PUAs are installed on the browser or operating system. Commonly, these apps are advertised as useful and legitimate, however, most are useless to regular users and can cause serious problems.

How did adware install on my computer?

Unwanted downloads and installations often occur when developers distribute PUAs by integrating them into the download/installation setups of other programs as "extra offers". This distribution method is known as "bundling". The offers can be declined in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings of the setups (or by unticking certain checkboxes).

Many users fail to check and change these settings (or untick the checkboxes), thereby allowing PUAs to infiltrate together with the desired software. PUAs are also downloaded and installed by clicking deceptive advertisements (usually on untrusted sites) that execute certain scripts.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

Download software and files from official websites and via direct links. It is not safe to use torrent clients, eMule (or other Peer-to-Peer networks), third party downloaders, unofficial websites or other sources of this kind. Avoid third party installers. Check "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings, and decline offers to download or install unwanted software.

Do not click ads that are displayed on dubious websites, since they can open other untrusted websites or even cause unwanted downloads and installations. Remove any unwanted, suspicious applications (extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins) that are installed on the browser.

The same should be applied to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?

Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.

Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
