How to remove the SuperVideoSearch browser hijacker?

Also Known As: supervideosearch.com redirect
Damage level: Medium

What is SuperVideoSearch?

SuperVideoSearch is a rogue browser extension classified as a browser hijacker. It operates by modifying browser settings to promote the supervideosearch.com fake search engine. Additionally, SuperVideoSearch spies on users' browsing habits. Due to the questionable methods used to distribute browser hijackers, they are also categorized as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications).

SuperVideoSearch browser hijacker in detail

Browser hijackers reassign browsers' default search engine, new tab/window, and homepage URLs - to fake web searcher addresses. SuperVideoSearch modifies browsers in this manner as well. Hence, with this browser hijacker installed: new tabs/windows opened and web searches done via the URL bar - redirect to supervideosearch.com.

Fake search engines rarely can provide search results, so they redirect to or cause redirection chains ending with legitimate ones. This also applies to supervideosearch.com; however, where it redirects to - depends on users' geolocations.

At the time of research, supervideosearch.com redirected either to the legitimate Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) search engine or searchlee.com. The latter is a fake web searcher, and while it can generate search results - they are inaccurate and may promote undesirable/malicious content.

Furthermore, browser hijackers can undo any changes users try to make to their browsers. Alternatively, they can restrict or deny access to the browser settings outright. Therefore, recovering an affected browser is impossible without removing the software hijacking it.

What is more, SuperVideoSearch has data tracking abilities, which is typical of browser hijackers. They record browsing activity (URLs visited, webpages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect sensitive information extracted from it (IP addresses/ geolocations, personally identifiable details, etc.).

The collected data is then shared with and/or sold to third-parties. In summary, the presence of data-tracking on devices can lead to severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user privacy, it is crucial to eliminate all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay.

Browser hijackers in general

Movie BarBrowse SafelyTopPDFSearch, and Movie Stuff are some examples of browser hijackers. They look legitimate and innocuous. Browser hijackers typically offer various "handy" features. However, the promised functionalities are seldom operational.

In fact, practically all PUAs advertise nonexistent functions to entice users into download/installation. Functionality and user safety are irrelevant, as the only aim of unwanted apps is to generate revenue for the developers. PUAs are designed to hijack browsers, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), and collect private data.

How did SuperVideoSearch install on my computer?

Select PUAs (e.g., SuperVideoSearch) have "official" promotional/download webpages. These applications are also proliferated through intrusive adverts. Once clicked on, the ads can execute scripts to make downloads/installations without user permission.

PUAs are also distributed via downloaders/installers of other products. This false marketing tactic of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions - is called "bundling". Rushed download/installation processes (e.g., ignored terms, skipped steps, etc.) increase the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the device.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is advised to research products before download/installation and/or purchase. Furthermore, all downloads must be performed from official and verified sources. Untrustworthy download channels, e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - commonly offer harmful content.

When downloading/installing, it is recommended to read terms, study all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out from additional apps, tools, functions, etc. Intrusive ads appear ordinary and innocuous; however, they redirect to various unreliable sites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so on).

In case of encounters with such advertisements and/or redirects, the device must be checked and all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with SuperVideoSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
