Also Known As: Ads by captchatest.top
Damage level: Medium

What kind of page is captchatest[.]top?

Captchatest[.]top is a rogue webpage that we found while inspecting untrustworthy sites. Users typically enter such webpages through redirects caused by sites using rogue advertising networks.

Captchatest[.]top overview

The content encountered on and through rogue websites can be dictated by the visitor's IP address/ geolocation. When we inspected captchatest[.]top, it displayed an image of a robot and the deceptive instructions - "CLICK ALLOW TO CONFIRM THAT YOU ARE NOT A ROBOT!".

This fake CAPTCHA verification is intended to deceive visitors into enabling captchatest[.]top to deliver browser notifications. Once we clicked the "Allow" button, it redirected us to a site promoting the "Chrome Search Contest 2022" scam.

Rogue webpages use notifications to run intrusive advertisement campaigns. The delivered notifications/ads promote online scams, unreliable/harmful sites and software, and even malware.

Therefore, via websites like captchatest[.]top - users can experience system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft.

Browser notification spam in general

We have analyzed countless rogue webpages; online-guard[.]comnotificationnewsspace[.]comnews-fesihe[.]cc, and trexvideo[.]biz are just some examples.

The browser notifications these sites display mainly promote deceptive/malicious content. It is pertinent to mention that any legitimate products encountered through these advertisements are unlikely to be endorsed by their actual developers. Instead, this promotion is undertaken by scammers abusing the products' affiliate programs to obtain illegitimate commissions.

How did captchatest[.]top gain permission to deliver spam notifications?

Sites cannot deliver browser notifications without user consent. Therefore, you have likely visited captchatest[.]top and permitted it to display them (i.e., clicked "Allow", "Allow Notifications", etc.). Note that many rogue pages employ fake CAPTCHA, clickbait, and other deceptive content to trick visitors into enabling notification delivery.

How to prevent deceptive sites from delivering spam notifications?

To avoid receiving undesirable browser notifications, do not enable suspicious websites to deliver them (i.e., do not click "Allow", "Allow Notifications", etc.). Instead, ignore or deny notification delivery requests (i.e., press "Block", "Block Notifications", etc.).

Should your browser keep randomly force-opening questionable sites unprompted, it could be caused by adware installed onto the browser or system. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?

Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.

Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
