After inspecting this "Retik Finance Giveaway", we determined that it is fake. This scheme impersonates the Retik Finance platform (retik.com). When users attempt to claim digital assets from this fraudulent site, they expose their cryptowallets to a cryptocurrency drainer.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We do not review crypto projects, please do your own research when investing money.

Federal Trade Comission (FTC) states that since the start of 2021, more than 46,000 people have reported losing over $1 billion in crypto to scams – that's about one out of every four dollars reported lost, more than any other payment method.

Fake "Retik Finance Giveaway" overview

This bogus giveaway is an almost identical visual copy of Retik Finance – a blockchain platform offering a digital wallet service, DeFi debit cards, a payment gateway, and AI-powered Peer-to-Peer lending. We found this scam promoted on several domains – claim-retik[.]live and claim-retikfinance[.]live – but it could be hosted on others as well.

It must be emphasized that this giveaway is fake, and it is not associated with the real Retik Finance or any other existing platforms and entities.

Once a user presses the "Claim" button on the fraudulent page, they are prompted to connect their digital wallet. Doing so executes scripts for a cryptocurrency-draining mechanism, which carries out automated transfers from victims' wallets to ones owned by scammers.

Drainers may be capable of approximating the value of digital assets and prioritizing them. These transactions may appear innocuous, thus remaining unnoticed for a long time.

Hence, victims of scams like this fake "Retik Finance Giveaway" can lose all or most of the funds in the exposed digital wallets. Furthermore, these transactions cannot be reversed because of their practically untraceable nature.

Cryptocurrency drainer scam examples

"Metis Dao Quest Registration", "APECOIN Airdrop", "$GUMMY Airdrop", "Hedgies Giveaway", and "Claim $ROCKY" are merely some examples of crypto drainers.

Various scams can be encountered on the Web. They use lures to gain and subsequently abuse victims' trust, e.g., claims relating to giveaways/airdrops, new coin/token promotions, wallet/account issues, suspicious activity, security upgrades, lotteries, shipping mishaps, software updates, system infections, etc.

Online schemes are often riddled with errors. However, they can also be competently crafted and even believably disguised as legitimate websites. Therefore, exercise caution when browsing and investing.

How did I open a scam website?

Online scams are primarily endorsed through malvertising (intrusive advertisements), websites using rogue advertising networks, spam (e.g., PMs/DMs, social media/ forum posts, emails, SMSes, browser notifications, etc.), typosquatting (mistyped URLs), and adware.

How to avoid visiting scam websites?

The Internet is rife with fraudulent and malicious content. Therefore, pay attention to URLs and enter them carefully. Do not trust online offers that sound too good to be true. Be selective when clicking adverts and allowing sites to deliver browser notifications. Do not permit suspicious pages to display notifications, and instead ignore or deny these requests (i.e., click "Block", "Block Notifications", etc.).

Do not use websites offering pirated programs/media or other questionable services (e.g., Torrenting, illegal streaming/downloading, etc.), as these webpages usually utilize rogue advertising networks. Be vigilant with incoming mail, and do not open attachments/links found in dubious emails or other messages.

Download only from official/verified sources and treat installations with care (e.g., study terms and options, use "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt out of all additional apps, extensions, etc.) – to prevent bundled/harmful software from infiltrating the device.

If your computer is already infected, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate all threats.

How to identify a pop-up scam?

Pop-up windows with various fake messages are a common type of lures cybercriminals use. They collect sensitive personal data, trick Internet users into calling fake tech support numbers, subscribe to useless online services, invest in shady cryptocurrency schemes, etc.

While in the majority of cases these pop-ups don't infect users' devices with malware, they can cause direct monetary loss or could result in identity theft.

Cybercriminals strive to create their rogue pop-up windows to look trustworthy, however, scams typically have the following characteristics:

  • Spelling mistakes and non-professional images - Closely inspect the information displayed in a pop-up. Spelling mistakes and unprofessional images could be a sign of a scam.
  • Sense of urgency - Countdown timer with a couple of minutes on it, asking you to enter your personal information or subscribe to some online service.
  • Statements that you won something - If you haven't participated in a lottery, online competition, etc., and you see a pop-up window stating that you won.
  • Computer or mobile device scan - A pop-up window that scans your device and informs of detected issues - is undoubtedly a scam; webpages cannot perform such actions.
  • Exclusivity - Pop-up windows stating that only you are given secret access to a financial scheme that can quickly make you rich.

  • If you gave away your personal information: You should change your passwords and enable two-factor authentication in all online services that you use. Visit Federal Trade Commission to report identity theft and get personalized recovery steps.
