Search.perfetnight.com Redirect (Mac)

Also Known As: search.perfetnight.com browser hijacker
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is search.perfetnight.com?

Search.perfetnight.com is a fake Internet search engine identical to search.boydubed.com, search.bilabordnet.com, search.kyushuplow.com, and dozens of other dubious sites. Judging on appearance alone, search.perfetnight.com may seem similar or identical to Bing, Google, Yahoo, and other similar sites.

Therefore, many users believe that search.perfetnight.com is also reputable. In fact, developers promote this site using dubious application 'installers' that hijack Internet browsers. Furthermore, this website continually gathers various data relating to Internet browsing activity.

search.perfetnight.com browser hijacker on a Mac computer

Installers promoting this bogus site target Safari, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. They hijack these browsers, assigning the new tab URL, homepage, and default search engine settings to search.perfetnight.com. 'Helper objects' (third party applications and/or browser plug-ins) are then installed to automatically reassign the aforementioned settings to search.perfetnight.com.

Therefore, users become unable to return browsers to their previous states and continually encounter unwanted browser redirects, significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.

In addition, search.perfetnight.com records Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, search queries entered into search engines, website URLs visited, pages viewed, and other similar browsing-related information. This data might contain personally identifiable details that developers of this bogus site share with third parties (who misuse private details to generate revenue).

This behavior can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. If you are continually redirected to search.perfetnight.com without your consent, uninstall all recently-installed applications and never visit this site again.

There are hundreds of fake Internet search engines virtually identical to search.perfetnight.com. All falsely claim to enhance the web browsing experience by generating the most relevant search results, however, these claims are simply attempts to trick users into believing that websites such as search.perfetnight.com are legitimate.

In reality, the purpose of those sites is to generate revenue for the developers and most provide no value for regular users.

Fake Internet search engines simply cause unwanted browser redirects and gather personal data. Furthermore, some generate results that lead to infectious websites. Therefore, searching using these sites is risky and can result in further computer infections.

How did search.perfetnight.com install on my computer?

Developers promote search.perfetnight.com using a deceptive marketing method called 'bundling'. Research shows that many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software. Aware of this, developers conceal details regarding modification of browser options within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of the download or installation processes.

Skipping this section grants set-ups permission to modify browser settings without users' consent. This behavior can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

The key to computer safety is caution. Many potentially unwanted programs are distributed using the 'bundling' method and, therefore, it is very important to closely analyze each step of the download/installation processes.

Use the 'Custom/Advanced' settings, observe each step, opt-out of all third party applications listed for download/installation, and never allow installers to modify settings that are irrelevant to the installation.
