What is EZupdater?
EZupdater is a rogue application that supposedly allows users to update installed software and optimize computer performance. Initially, EZupdater may seem legitimate and useful, however, this app is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
There are three main reasons for these negative associations: 1) stealth installation without consent; 2) display of intrusive online advertisements, and; 3) tracking of users' Internet browsing activity.
Following infiltration, EZupdater delivers coupon, banner, pop-up, and other similar advertisements. To achieve this, developers employ a "virtual layer" - a tool that enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, displayed ads often conceal underlying content of visited websites, thereby significantly diminishing the browsing experience.
In addition, some lead to malicious websites - clicking them is risky and can result in high-risk adware or malware infections. Another downside is information tracking. EZupdater gathers various data that might contain personal details. The list of collected data types includes (but is not limited to) IP addresses, URLs visited, search queries, and pages viewed.
This information is shared with third parties who generate revenue by misusing personal details. Therefore, the presence of an information-tracking app can result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Uninstall EZupdater adware immediately.
EZupdater has very similar characteristics to CloudExtender, Cookies On-Off, Tigers Deal, and hundreds of other adware-type applications. Note that all of these apps offer different features, but have identical behavior.
Adware-type programs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than providing any value for regular users, EZupdater and other similar apps deliver intrusive advertisements (via the "Pay Per Click" advertising model) and continually record user-system information (which is later sold to third parties).
How did EZupdater install on my computer?
This adware has an official download website, however, it is also distributed using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling", whilst regular users often install EZupdater inadvertently without their consent, since they rush the download/installation processes and skip steps.
Aware of this, developers hide bundled programs within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. By carelessly skipping this section, users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
There are two simple steps you should take to prevent this situation. Firstly, select the "Custom/Advanced" settings and carefully analyze each step. Secondly, decline offers to download/install additional applications and opt-out of those already included. Most bundled software is classed as malicious and should never be installed.
