Webunstop Adware

Also Known As: Ads by Webunstop
Type: Adware
Damage level: Medium

What is Webunstop?

Identical to VidSqaure, Unstopaccess, Un-stop, and a number of others, Webunstop is a deceptive application that supposedly allows users to access websites blocked in their own countries. Initially, this functionality may appear legitimate and useful, however, Webunstop is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.

There are three main reasons for these negative associations: 1) stealth installation without consent; 2) display of intrusive online advertisements, and; 3) tracking of users' Internet browsing activity.

Webunstop adware

Following infiltration, Webunstop delivers pop-ups, banners, coupons, and other similar intrusive advertisements. Cyber criminals employ various tools (including a "virtual layer") that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, the ads generated often conceal underlying content, significantly diminishing the browsing experience.

Furthermore, intrusive ads often redirect to malicious websites or even activate/execute scripts that download and install malware (or other PUPs). Therefore, clicking them is very risky and can lead to further computer infections. Another downside is information tracking. As with most adware-type apps, Webunstop records various information relating to browsing activity.

The collected data (IP addresses, geo-locations, website URLs visited, queries entered into search queries, pages viewed, etc.) might contain personal details that PUP developers sell to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). These people also aim to generate revenue by misusing personal details.

Therefore, information tracking can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We strongly advise you to uninstall Webunstop adware immediately.

The Internet is full of adware-type applications, all of which are virtually identical. By offering "useful features", apps such as Webunstop, Search My Tabs, Direct Web Links, and Clean My Chrome attempt to give the impression of legitimacy. Although these apps offer different functionality, they have identical behavior.

The only purpose of all adware is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than providing any significant value for regular users, apps such as Webunstop deliver intrusive online ads (using the "Pay Per Click" advertising model) and continually record private information (which is later sold to third parties).

How did Webunstop install on my computer?

Webunstop has an official download website, however, developers also proliferate this PUP using intrusive ads and a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" - stealth installation of third party applications with regular (mostly free) software/programs. Developers hide "bundled" apps within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings of the download/installation processes.

Rushing this stage, skipping steps, and clicking ads often leads to inadvertent installation of PUPs (users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy).

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

The main reasons for computer infections are careless behavior and lack of knowledge. To prevent system infiltration by adware-type apps, be cautious when browsing the Internet and when downloading/installing software. Avoid clicking any advertisements, no matter how tempting they may seem.

Research shows that cyber criminals put a great deal of time and effort into designing advertisements. Therefore, they often appear genuine, and determining if they originate from visited (legitimate) websites becomes virtually impossible. Do not take the risk of clicking them.

Download your software from trusted sources only and select the direct download URL rather than using third party downloaders.

These tools commonly "bundle" malicious apps and, thus, we strongly advise against using them. During download/installation, select the "Custom/Advanced" settings, carefully analyze each step, and opt-out of all additionally-included programs. The key to computer safety is caution.
