What is hp.myway.com?

TestOnlineSpeed is a deceptive application developed by Mindspark Interactive Network (also known as IAC Applications). By offering a feature that allows users to test their Internet performance, TestOnlineSpeed attempts to give the impression of legitimacy. Be aware, however, that this potentially unwanted program (PUP) often infiltrates systems without users’ permission. Furthermore, TestOnlineSpeed is classed as a browser hijacker - a form of unwanted software that modifies web browser options without permission.

hp.myway.com browser hijacker

Immediately after infiltration, TestOnlineSpeed stealthily hijacks web browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox) and assigns the new tab URL, default search engine, and homepage options to TestOnlineSpeed. Although these changes may seem insignificant, users are unable to revert them. Be aware that TestOnlineSpeed reassigns browser options when attempts are made to change them. Therefore, it is impossible to return browsers to their previous states and users are forced to visit hp.myway.com when they open a new browser tab or search via the URL bar. Developers use TestOnlineSpeed to deceptively build traffic for this website, however, in doing so, developers significantly diminish users' Internet browsing experience. Furthermore, although it is currently unknown whether TestOnlineSpeed collects information, most browser hijackers do. Research shows that such apps commonly record users' geo-locations, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, keystrokes, and other similar data that often includes personal details. After collecting this information, PUP developers usually sell it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). Therefore, information tracking might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Some potentially unwanted programs misuse system resources to run various background processes (e.g., cryptocurrency mining). This behavior significantly diminishes computer performance. For these reasons, we strongly advise you to remove all potentially unwanted programs immediately.

TestOnlineSpeed is identical to HoroscopeBuddy, ConvertersNow, MyEasyLotto, and dozens of other PUPs developed by the same company. In fact, all browser-hijacking applications are very similar. By offering various 'useful features', PUPs attempt to give the impression of legitimacy, however, these programs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers. Therefore, in most cases they deliver no real value for regular users. Browser-hijacking apps cause unwanted redirects, gather information, and misuse system resources, thereby posing a threat to your privacy and Internet browsing safety.

How did TestOnlineSpeed install on my computer?

TestOnlineSpeed is free for anyone to download on its official website, however, as with most browser hijackers, TestOnlineSpeed is also proliferated using 'malvertising' ads, and a deceptive marketing method called "bundling". Therefore, PUPs often infiltrate systems without permission. Malvertising ads (pop-ups, coupons, banners, etc.) redirect users to malicious websites and, in some cases, execute scripts that download and install malware/PUPs. Meanwhile, "bundling" is stealth installation of third party programs together with regular software/apps. Developers do not disclose installation of "bundled" programs properly - they hide this information within the "Custom/Advanced" settings or other sections of the download/installation processes. Many users click advertisements carelessly and are very likely to rush download/installation processes and skip steps. For these reasons, they often inadvertently install potentially unwanted programs.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

The main reasons for computer infections are poor knowledge and careless behavior. Therefore, pay close attention when browsing the Internet and especially when downloading/installing software. Bear in mind that criminals invest a great deal of time and resources into designing malicious ads. Therefore, most appear genuine, however, they can be distinguished for their redirects - most lead to adult dating, gambling, survey, pornography, and other dubious websites. They are often displayed by various adware-type programs. Therefore, if you encounter 'malvertising' ads, immediately eliminate all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins. Furthermore. carefully analyze each step of the download/installation processes and opt-out of all additionally-included programs. The key to computer safety is caution.
