What is go.mennythanks.com?
Identical to go.bonefreeze.com, and a number of others sites, go.mennythanks.com is a fake web search engine that, according to the developers, enhances the browsing experience by generating improved results. Judging on appearance alone, go.mennythanks.com may seem similar to Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other legitimate search engines.
Therefore, many users believe that go.mennythanks.com is also legitimate, however, developers promote this fake search engine using a browser-hijacking app called Mennythanks. In addition, go.mennythanks.com and Mennythanks continually record user-system information relating to web browsing activity.
Mennythanks targets Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. Immediately after infiltration, Mennythanks assigns the new tab URL, default search engine, and homepage options to go.mennythanks.com. Furthermore, it reassigns settings when attempts are made to change them. Therefore, users are unable to return browsers to their previous states.
Mennythanks essentially forces users to visit go.mennythanks.com when they search via the URL bar or simply open a new browser tab. In doing so, this site significantly diminishes the web browsing experience. Another important issue is data tracking. After entering a search query, users are redirected to search.yahoo.com and end up searching via the Yahoo search engine.
This makes go.mennythanks.com useless. Research shows that go.mennythanks.com and Mennythanks record information such as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, search queries, URLs visited, pages viewed, and other similar information relating to web browsing habits.
Collected data usually includes personal details that developers share with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). There is a high probability that these people will misuse the data to generate revenue.
Therefore, data tracking can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. If you experience redirects to go.mennythanks.com, remove all dubious applications and browser plug-ins.

The Internet is full of fake web search engines, all of which are virtually identical to go.mennythanks.com. The list of examples includes (but is not limited to) smartmediatabsearch.com, search.dssearchhelper.com, searchencrypt.com, and ewoss.com.
All claim to enhance the browsing experience by generating improved results and, sometimes, other 'useful features' (weather forecasts, currency exchange rates, shortcuts to popular websites, etc.) By offering these functions, websites such as go.mennythanks.com attempt to give the impression of legitimacy, but fake search engines are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
Users receive no real value from them. These sites cause unwanted redirects and gather sensitive information. Some also generate false search results and intrusive advertisements (e.g., coupons, banners, etc.) leading to malicious sites. Therefore, using fake web search engines might lead to high-risk computer infections.
How did Mennythanks install on my computer?
Research shows that, although Mennythanks has an official download website, many users install this PUP inadvertently without their consent, since developers proliferate it using intrusive advertising and "bundling" methods. Intrusive ads redirect to malicious websites and run scripts that stealthily download and install malware/PUPs.
"Bundling" is stealth installation of third party programs with regular software/apps. Developers hide "bundled" apps within various sections (typically "Custom/Advanced" settings) of the download/installation processes. Many uses click various advertisements and skip download/installation steps.
This behavior often leads to inadvertent installation of potentially unwanted programs such as Mennythanks. It also exposes systems to risk of various infections and compromises users' privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The main reasons for computer infections are poor knowledge and careless behavior. The key to safety is caution. Therefore, pay close attention when browsing the Internet and downloading/installing software. Bear in mind that criminals invest many resources into intrusive ad design, thereby making them seem legitimate.
Once clicked, however, they redirect to gambling, adult dating, pornography, and other dubious websites. Most intrusive ads are delivered by adware-type programs. If you encounter suspicious redirects, immediately remove all dubious applications and browser plug-ins.
Furthermore, carefully analyze each step of the download/installation processes and opt-out of all additionally-included programs. We also strongly recommend that you download your apps from official sources only, using direct download links, rather than third party downloaders/installers. These tools often promote PUPs, and thus should not be used.
