Your Battery Is Damaged By Viruses POP-UP Scam

Also Known As: "Your Battery Is Damaged By Viruses" virus
Damage level: Medium

What is Your Battery Is Damaged By Viruses?

"Your Battery Is Damaged By Viruses" is another fake error displayed by various deceptive websites. Research shows that many users visit these sites inadvertently - they are redirected by intrusive advertisements (displayed by other malicious sites) or potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) that infiltrate systems without permission.

As well as causing redirects, PUPs deliver intrusive advertisements, gather sensitive information, and even run unwanted processes in the background.

Your Battery Is Damaged By Viruses scam

"Your Battery Is Damaged By Viruses" mainly targets users of the Android operating system (smartphones and tables), however, this does not mean that it is harmless to PC users. After entering the malicious site, users are prompted with an error message stating that the device's battery is damaged by a type of infection.

They are then encouraged to immediately download a 'system repair tool'. Be aware, however, that "Your Battery Is Damaged By Viruses" is false and simply used to proliferate potentially unwanted programs (typically fake anti-virus/system optimization tools that attempt to trick users into paying for in-app purchases).

Therefore, ignore "Your Battery Is Damaged By Viruses" and certainly do not download promoted tools. If, however, you have already downloaded and installed the promoted software, remove it immediately. To achieve this on a PC, follow the adware-removal instructions below. For Android, follow instructions provided in this article.

The "Your Battery Is Damaged By Viruses" error can be removed simply by closing the web browser, however, note that some rogue sites employ scripts designed to prevent users from closing browsing tabs/windows.

In these cases, close the browser using Task Manager or simply reboot the system. Note that after re-running the browser, do not restore the previous session, otherwise you will return to these rogue sites.

As mentioned above, redirects are not the only problems caused by PUPs. These programs also deliver coupon, banner, and other intrusive ads. To achieve this, developers employ tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, the ads often conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the browsing experience.

Furthermore, some lead to malicious websites and even run scripts designed to stealthily download and install malware/PUPs. Therefore, even a single click can lead to high-risk computer infections. Another significant downside is data tracking.

PUPs gather various information including (but not limited to) IP addresses, geo-locations, Internet service providers (ISPs), keystrokes, websites visited, pages viewed, and queries entered into search engines. Collected data might include personal details that are shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse received data to generate revenue.

Therefore, the presence of information-tracking apps can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Potentially unwanted programs also mine cryptocurrencies or run other unwanted processes in the background. By stealthily misusing resources, they significantly reduce overall system performance. For these reason, all PUPs must be eliminated immediately.

There are dozens of fake errors similar to "Your Battery Is Damaged By Viruses" including, for example, System Support Alert, Your Connection To This Site Is Not Private, and Dangerous Try To Get Access To Your Personal Logins

All claim that the system is infected or damaged in other similar ways, however, unlike "Your Battery Is Damaged By Viruses", most fake errors do not promote PUPs. They are designed to scare and trick users into calling fake tech support and paying for services that are not required.

Potentially unwanted programs, on the other hand, are all very similar and offer various "useful features" in attempts to give the impression of legitimacy. In fact, their only purpose is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than enabling the functionality promised, PUPs pose a direct threat to your privacy and Internet browsing safety.

How did potentially unwanted programs install on my computer?

Some PUPs have official download/promotion sites, however, due to the lack of knowledge and careless behavior of many users, they often infiltrate systems without permission. These programs are distributed using intrusive advertisements and a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" (stealth installation of third party apps together with regular software).

Developers know that users often rush the download/installation processes. Therefore, intrusive ads are hidden within "Custom/Advanced" settings or other sections of these procedures. By skipping download/installation steps and clicking ads, many users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

To prevent system infiltration by PUPs, be extremely cautious when downloading/installing software and browsing the Internet in general. Select "Custom/Advanced" settings and carefully analyze each window of the download/installation dialogs. Opt-out of all additionally-included programs and decline offers to download/install them.

You are also advised to avoid using third party downloaders/installers, since criminals monetize them by promoting PUPs. Your software should be downloaded from official sources only, using direct download links.

It is also important to note that intrusive ads typically seem legitimate, but redirect to gambling, adult dating, pornography, and other untrustworthy websites. If you experience these redirects, immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins.
