Get Breaking News browser hijacker removal instructions
What is Get Breaking News?
The Get Breaking News app supposedly provides quick access to various popular news websites, however, it promotes a fake search engine (search.getbreakingnewstabnet.com) by changing browser settings. It also gathers information relating to users' browsing activities. Apps that operate in this way are called browser hijackers - they are potentially unwanted applications (PUAs), which most people download and install unintentionally. Furthermore, Get Breaking News is installed together with another PUA called Hide My Searches.
Most browser hijackers promote fake search engines by changing settings such as address of the default search engine, new tab, and homepage. Get Breaking News assigns them to search.getbreakingnewstabnet.com. This is a fake search engine that provides results generated by Yahoo (if used, it simply redirects users to search.yahoo.com, a legitimate search engine). Therefore, it does not generate any unique results. It is impossible to remove search.getbreakingnewstabnet.com from the aforementioned settings unless Get Breaking News is uninstalled from the browser and operating system. Typically, apps of this type do not allow users to change/modify browser settings as long as they are installed. Furthermore, most browser hijackers gather data such as users' IP addresses, URLs of visited websites, entered search queries, geolocations, etc. In some cases, PUAs record private, sensitive information. Developers share the data with third parties (potentially cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue. Having your browser hijacked by these apps could lead to problems with browsing safety, privacy, and even identity theft. We strongly recommend that you uninstall Get Breaking News, Hide My Searches, and other browser hijackers immediately.

There are many examples of apps that are classified as browser hijackers including Better Converter Pro, Live Radio Pro Tab, and Online Recipes Viewer. Typically, developers advertise them as useful and legitimate applications that supposedly provide various features. In fact, most are useless and designed to gather information and promote fake search engines. They do not operate as advertised and often cause problems.
How did Get Breaking News install on my computer?
This browser hijacker is available for download on its websites, however, these apps are often installed with other software or through intrusive (deceptive) advertisements. To trick people into unintentional downloads/installations, developers often use a deceptive marketing method called "bundling". They include PUAs into the set-ups of other programs and present them as additional offers. Typically, related information can be found in setup settings such as "Custom", "Advanced", and so on. Many people fail to check and change these settings, thus granting permissions for PUAs to be downloaded and installed with other software. In other cases, people download/install them inadvertently when they click deceptive ads - these often run scripts to download/install PUAs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Download all applications from official, trustworthy websites. Avoid using third party software downloaders, installers, unofficial web pages, Peer-to-Peer networks (torrent clients, eMule), or other tools/sources to download or install programs. Download and/or install programs properly. Check each available option (such as "Custom", "Advanced") available in the setup and dismiss offers to change browser settings, download or install unwanted apps, and so on. If clicked, intrusive ads can open potentially malicious web pages. Do not to trust these ads or web pages. Remove all unwanted plug-ins, extensions, and add-ons from the browser and programs from the operating system. If your computer is already infected with Get Breaking News, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
