What is PiXie?
PiXie is malicious software classified as a Remote Access Trojan (RAT). It primarily operates by stealing account credentials (logins, passwords) and recording videos. It also has keylogging abilities (i.e., monitors key strokes). RAT-type malware is categorized as a high-risk infection and can lead to a number of serious issues.
Remote access trojans can be used in many ways, mostly which grant cyber criminals behind them control over an infected device and data. RATs can enable criminals to execute shell commands, manage/edit system and personal files, record key strokes, allow access to connected hardware and so on. The PiXie list of functionalities includes, but is not limited to, system/browsing data tracking/recording/exfiltration/alteration (network scanning, software monitoring, web injects, cookie theft, etc.), communication recording/alteration (man-in-the-middle [MITM] interception), keylogging (credential theft), hardware manipulation (video/audio recording, plugged storage device monitoring and data exfiltration, digital certificate theft, etc.). To elaborate on how some of these capabilities can be used: through PiXie's keylogging component, all manner of private and confidential information can be gathered. Thereby, giving cyber criminals access and control over financial, cryptocurrency, social networking and social media, email and other accounts. These accounts in turn can be employed to make monetary (or monetary equivalent, e.g. cryptocurrency) transactions and/or make online purchases. Social media and communication service accounts can be used to further the infection and/or demand loans from the contacts, under the guise of the affected user. Information gained from plugged storage devices (e.g. USB drives) and videos/audio recorded from the device's camera/microphone can be used for blackmail purposes. PiXie can also be used to inject the system with additional malware (e.g. ransomware). These are just a few threats posed by this RAT. In summary, the presence of PiXie can cause browser and system infiltration/infections, and lead to serious privacy issues, financial loss and identity theft. This type of trojan is difficult to detect, however, PiXie detection is further complicated due its use of the 'side-loading' technique. In simple terms, this malicious program hides behind legitimate applications. Therefore, anti-virus software might only have visibility of the genuine app and not the RAT. If it is suspected or known that PiXie has already infected the device, it is paramount to remove it immediately.

How to avoid installation of malware
Suspicious and/or irrelevant emails should not be opened, especially those received from unknown addresses. All attachments (or web-links) found in such mail must never be opened, since this can trigger the files to begin downloading/installing malware. Use Microsoft Office versions released after 2010, since they have "Protected View" mode, which prevents malicious macros from starting to download/install malicious content the moment an infectious document is opened. You are advised to use only official and verified download sources. Software should be activated and updated with tools/functions provided by legitimate developers. Illegal activation ("cracking") tools and third party updaters are classed as high-risk. You are advised to have a reputable anti-virus/anti-spyware suite installed and kept up-to-date. Furthermore, this should be used for regular system scans and removal of potential threats/issues. How to remove malware manually?

If you checked the list of programs running on your computer, for example, using task manager, and identified a program that looks suspicious, you should continue with these steps:
Download a program called Autoruns. This program shows auto-start applications, Registry, and file system locations:
Restart your computer into Safe Mode:
Windows XP and Windows 7 users: Start your computer in Safe Mode. Click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart, click OK. During your computer start process, press the F8 key on your keyboard multiple times until you see the Windows Advanced Option menu, and then select Safe Mode with Networking from the list.

Windows 8 users: Start Windows 8 is Safe Mode with Networking - Go to Windows 8 Start Screen, type Advanced, in the search results select Settings. Click Advanced startup options, in the opened "General PC Settings" window, select Advanced startup. Click the "Restart now" button. Your computer will now restart into the "Advanced Startup options menu". Click the "Troubleshoot" button, and then click the "Advanced options" button. In the advanced option screen, click "Startup settings". Click the "Restart" button. Your PC will restart into the Startup Settings screen. Press F5 to boot in Safe Mode with Networking.

Windows 10 users: Click the Windows logo and select the Power icon. In the opened menu click "Restart" while holding "Shift" button on your keyboard. In the "choose an option" window click on the "Troubleshoot", next select "Advanced options". In the advanced options menu select "Startup Settings" and click on the "Restart" button. In the following window you should click the "F5" button on your keyboard. This will restart your operating system in safe mode with networking.

Extract the downloaded archive and run the Autoruns.exe file.
In the Autoruns application, click "Options" at the top and uncheck "Hide Empty Locations" and "Hide Windows Entries" options. After this procedure, click the "Refresh" icon.
Check the list provided by the Autoruns application and locate the malware file that you want to eliminate.
You should write down its full path and name. Note that some malware hides process names under legitimate Windows process names. At this stage, it is very important to avoid removing system files. After you locate the suspicious program you wish to remove, right click your mouse over its name and choose "Delete".
After removing the malware through the Autoruns application (this ensures that the malware will not run automatically on the next system startup), you should search for the malware name on your computer. Be sure to enable hidden files and folders before proceeding. If you find the filename of the malware, be sure to remove it.
Reboot your computer in normal mode. Following these steps should remove any malware from your computer. Note that manual threat removal requires advanced computer skills. If you do not have these skills, leave malware removal to antivirus and anti-malware programs. These steps might not work with advanced malware infections. As always it is best to prevent infection than try to remove malware later. To keep your computer safe, install the latest operating system updates and use antivirus software.
