Stop browsers from opening horny-vid.com

Also Known As: horny-vid.com pop-up
Damage level: Medium

What is horny-vid[.]com?

horny-vid[.]com is a rogue website. Like many other web pages of this type (such as rex-news1[.]club, pushpush[.]net, nerdailingcurv[.]com, etc.), horny-vid[.]com redirects people to various other untrustworthy sites, or loads dubious content.

Visitors do not generally open this site intentionally - in most cases, they are opened by Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) installed on browsers and/or computers. Furthermore, apps of this type usually gather browsing data and display intrusive ads.

horny-vid[.]com pop-up redirects

When an installed PUA opens horny-vid[.]com in a new browser window or tab, the site opens a number of other (about 2-3) untrustworthy web pages or loads dubious content. This depends on the user's geolocation. Web pages that are opened through sites such as horny-vid[.]com are used to promote untrustworthy, dubious applications, deploy deceptive ads, and so on.

Note that horny-vid[.]com asks permission to show notifications using a 'clickbait' technique - it encourages visitors to press the "Allow" button to play a video. If clicked, the button allows horny-vid[.]com to display various notifications, which might contain deceptive ads, links to potentially malicious pages, etc.

Furthermore, installed PUAs usually collect browsing-related (and other) data. They target details such as IP addresses, addresses of visited websites, entered search queries, geolocations, and so on, however, they sometimes also collect personal details.

The developers tend to sell the data to third parties who misuse it to generate revenue. Some of the involved third parties might be cyber criminals.

PUAs commonly serve unwanted ads. For instance, coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups ads, etc. Typically, these conceal underlying content of visited web pages. When clicked, the ads open dubious websites or execute scripts that download and install unwanted apps.

Unwanted apps of this type are advertised as legitimate, useful, and so on, however, most PUAs cause redirects to untrustworthy web pages, feed users with advertisements, and collect user-system information. Having them installed can result in problems with privacy, browsing safety, and some users might even become victims of identity theft.

Therefore, never trust PUAs and uninstall them immediately from browsers and operating systems.

How did adware install on my computer?

Generally, PUAs are downloaded/installed by people unintentionally. This happens when PUAs are included into the set-ups of other software. In most cases, offers to download/install these additional apps are hidden in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings of the download and installation set-ups.

This distribution method that developers use to proliferate unwanted apps is called "bundling". It works perfectly when people leave the aforementioned settings unchecked and unchanged, thereby allowing unwanted apps to be downloaded and installed together with other software.

Note that PUAs can also be downloaded and installed through deceptive ads, but only when they are clicked.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

Download and install software from official websites and DO NOT use third party downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks (torrent clients, eMule, and so on), unofficial websites or other similar channels/sources. Check all download/installation setup settings, and dismiss offers to download or install unwanted apps.

Do not click intrusive ads, especially on unofficial, dubious websites. If clicked, they often open dubious, potentially malicious web pages or trigger unwanted downloads and installations. Remove any unwanted, unknown or suspicious extensions, add-ons or plug-ins from the browser.

Also apply this to programs of this type that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?

Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.

Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
