Stop redirects to and from add-to-browser.xyz

Also Known As: add-to-browser.xyz pop-up
Type: Adware
Damage level: Medium

What is add-to-browser[.]xyz?

add-to-browser[.]xyz is an untrustworthy website. There are countless rogue web pages on the internet which present visitors with dubious content and/or redirect them to other dubious and malicious sites including, for example, grabthemp3.comthegoodcaster.com, and 27news.biz.

Note that add-to-browser[.]xyz specifically promotes dubious browser extensions. Websites of this type are usually accessed unintentionally, since many users are redirected to them by intrusive advertisements or Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) already infiltrated into the system.

Untrustworthy browser extensions can be nonoperational (i.e., they do not perform their advertised functions), have harmful capabilities and diminish the browsing experience. They can operate as browser hijackers, adware, and monitor users' browsing habits.

These dangerous capabilities are possessed by many PUAs. Browser hijackers make unauthorized changes to browsers, limit/deny access to settings and promote fake search engines. Software classified as adware runs intrusive advertisement campaigns - they deliver unwanted and dangerous ads (e.g. pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys, etc.).

When ads of this kind are clicked, they can redirect to sale-oriented, rogue, deceptive/scam and malicious sites. Some of these ads can even execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' consent. As mentioned, unwanted apps can force-open web pages (including add-to-browser[.]xyz) and other, similarly hazardous web pages.

Data-tracking is also a serious concern. PUAs can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, search queries typed, etc.) and gather users' personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). This sensitive data can then be shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) intent on misusing it for profit.

Therefore, the presence of data-tracking software can lead to serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, you are advised to remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

PUAs may seem legitimate and highly functional. They lure users into downloading/installing them with a wide variety of "useful" functions, however, these features rarely work as promised. In most cases, they do not work at all. The only purpose of all unwanted content is to generate revenue for the developers at the expense of regular users.

Rather than delivering useful features, PUAs cause redirects to untrustworthy and malicious websites, hijack browsers, deliver intrusive ads and collect private data.

How did adware install on my computer?

Unwanted content is often promoted on "official" web pages, which in turn are promoted by untrustworthy and deceptive/scam sites. It can also be downloaded/installed together with other programs. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular products with unwanted or malicious software is called "bundling".

When downloading/installing software, ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections or using pre-set options increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled programs onto devices - thereby endangering them with potential infiltration and infections. Intrusive advertisements also proliferate this content.

When clicked, they can execute scripts to make stealthy downloads/installations.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

It is important to research all products (apps, browser extensions/plug-ins, tools, etc.) before downloading/installing. Use only official and verified download channels. Untrustworthy download sources such as P2P sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.), free file-hosting websites and other third party downloaders can offer deceptive and/or bundled content.

Treat download and installation processes with caution. Read the terms, study all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of downloading/installing additional apps, tools, features and so on. Intrusive ads typically seem normal and harmless, however, they can redirect to dubious pages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).

If you experience ads/redirects of this type, check the system and remove all dubious applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate the.
