How to remove redirects to startnewestmostprogram[.]icu from Mac?

What is startnewestmostprogram[.]icu?

Startnewestmostprogram[.]icu is scam website, promoting a fake Flash Player updater. Visitors to this site are indirectly informed that their Flash is outdated. These fraudulent updaters are used to proliferate a variety of untrustworthy and malicious content. For example, they spread various PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications) and even malware (e.g. trojans, ransomware, etc.). Webpages like startnewestmostprogram[.]icu are rarely accessed intentionally, typically users get redirected to deceptive pages by intrusive ads or by PUAs

startnewestmostprogram[.]icu scam

When visited, the first thing visitors to startnewestmostprogram[.]icu see is a pop-up window. The text presented in it - informs users that Flash Player is an essential browser plug-in. It enables users to view media - ranging from audio, animation to video. Additionally, it allows users to interact with media like online games. Then there are Flash supported data formats listed, such as AMF, SWF, XML, JSON as well as multimedia formats - .MP3, .FLV, .JPEG, .GIF, .PNG and .RTMP. Other features include accelerated graphics rendering, multi-thread video decoding and webcam support. When the "Install" button is clicked the download of the fake updater is initiated and the page provides installation instructions. Users should note that these updates are not genuine, therefore installing them will not update Flash Player. Rather, trusting startnewestmostprogram[.]icu will allow unreliable and/or malicious software onto the system. Hence, it is expressly advised against downloading/installing content promoted via these dubious means.

Deceptive/Scam webpages are often force-opened by PUAs. These unwanted apps can force-open sale-oriented, untrustworthy/rogue, compromised and malicious sites as well. However, applications within this category can have other heinous abilities. Adware-type apps run intrusive advert campaigns, i.e. they deliver pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys and other browsing quality-diminishing ads. Furthermore, these adverts are deemed to be a threat to device and user safety. Once an intrusive advertisement is clicked, it can redirect to dangerous websites and execute scripts to download/install content (e.g. PUAs). Yet another type of unwanted application called browser hijacker - modifies browsers, limits/denied access to their settings and promotes fake search engines. Most PUAs, regardless of their specific abilities, can track data. They record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect users' personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and real-life details). This sensitive data is then likely to be shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals), intent on misusing it for profit. To summarize, PUAs can cause various browser/system infiltrations and infections, lead to severe privacy issues, financial losses and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety - all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed immediately upon detection.

Theworldofcontents.infomainplaceupgradesfree.infostartmostnewestprogram.icu are examples of deceptive sites similar to startnewestmostprogram[.]icu. Alerts that a crucial piece of software is outdated is but one scam model, other common ones include - warnings that the device infected and/or at risk, various prize announcements, ludicrous deals and so on. The purpose is to trick users into performing certain actions, like: downloading/installing/purchasing untrustworthy or malicious content, calling fake "free" technical support numbers, paying various fees, payments and other monetary transactions, revealing their personal information, etc. The only goal of these schemes is to generate revenue for their designers; therefore, users are strongly advised to exercise caution when browsing.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

Fake updaters are just one method of PUA proliferation. These apps can also be downloaded/installed alongside other products. This false marketing tactic of packing ordinary content with unwanted or malicious software is called "bundling". By ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using pre-set options - when downloading/installing, users risk inadvertently allowing bundled content onto their devices. Select PUAs have "official" download webpages, which are commonly endorsed by deceptive/scam pages. When intrusive advertisements are clicked, they can execute scripts, designed to stealthily download/install PUAs.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is recommended to always research products, prior to download/installation. Only official and verified download channels should be used. Untrustworthy sources like: P2P sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.), free file-hosting sites and other third party downloaders - can offer deceptive and/or bundled software. When downloading/installing, users should read terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out from supplementary apps, tools, features and so on. Intrusive ads rarely look suspicious, however they cause redirects to highly questionable websites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.). Should users experience adverts/redirects of this kind, they are to inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins form it without delay. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
