How to remove UtilityParse from Mac?

What is UtilityParse?

UtilityParse is a part of Pirrit adware family. Adware-type applications are designed to feed users with various intrusive, often deceptive advertisements and collect details related to user's browsing habits. Applications like UtilityParse are also known as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) because people tend to download and/or install them unintentionally.

UtilityParse adware

Research shows that UtilityParse is distributed through a fake Adobe Flash Player installer that can be downloaded from a deceptive website. Quite often such installers are designed to install other PUAs like browser hijackers as well. In some cases they install some Trojan, ransomware, or other malicious software. After installation UtilityParse starts to regularly display various intrusive advertisements that conceal underlying content of most or all visited websites. For example, various coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups, and other ads. When clicked, those ads either open various untrustworthy websites or execute scripts that download (and/or install) more unwanted software. Moreover, software like UtilityParse is usually designed to gather various browsing-related details (like IP addresses, geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, and other browsing data). In some cases adware can access (gather) sensitive information as well. It is common that adware developers generate revenue by selling all collected data to third parties (potentially cyber criminals) who misuse it in some other ways. Users of most adware-type apps risk to become victims of identity theft, experience problems related to privacy, browsing safety, cause unwanted downloads, installations, etc. Therefore, any installed adware (including UtilityParse) should be removed from a browser and/or operating system as soon as possible.

More examples of adware are SystemSpot, CentralRush and SystemNotes. Quite often apps of this type supposed to deliver some features, improve browsing experience, and so on. Nevertheless, most of them are designed only to serve ads and/or gather various information, do not deliver any value and cause various problems. These are the main reasons why no adware should be downloaded and installed.

How did UtilityParse install on my computer?

UtilityParseotes is distributed through a fake Adobe Flash Player installer. This distribution method is called "bundling". Developers who use it include unwanted apps in download and/or installation setups of various software, usually they hide information about included apps in "Custom", "Advanced" and other settings of setups. In this particular case UtilityParseotes installer is disguised as Adobe Flash Player installer, which means, people who expect to install Adobe Flash Player through that installer install UtilityParseotes instead. In other cases they download/and or install unwanted apps through setups of other software when they leave the aforementioned settings unchanged. Simply said, when they leave those settings unchanged, then they agree with offers to download/and or install any additionally included software. Also, unwanted downloads and/or installation can be caused by clicking deceptive ads that are designed to execute certain scripts. However, it happens only if those ads are clicked.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Software should be downloaded from official, trustworthy websites (and via direct links). It is not safe to download or install it via various third party downloaders, installers, Peer to-Peer networks (like torrent clients, eMule), questionable websites and other similar sources, tools. Download and installation setups often contain various settings (like "Advanced", "Custom"). Unwanted downloads and/or installations often can be prevented by checking those settings and declining offers to download and/or install unwanted, additionally included applications. Advertisements that are displayed on untrustworthy websites should not be clicked, they tend to redirect people to other pages of this kind, or download, install unwanted software. If there are some unwanted, suspicious extensions, plug-ins or add-ons installed on a browser, then they should be uninstalled. The same applies to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with UtilityParse, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
