How to remove searchiing.com browser hijacker from Mac?

What is searchiing.com?

Searchiing.com is the address of an illegitimate search engine. Such fake web searchers are usually promoted by PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications), categorized as browser hijackers. This software operates by making modifications to browsers and spying on users' browsing activity. Additionally, it is noteworthy that PUAs do not need explicit user consent to be installed onto devices.

searchiing.com browser hijacker on a Mac computer

Browser hijackers are designed to target Google Chrome, Safari, Mozilla Firefox and other popular browsers with large user bases. These rogue apps assign the addresses of illegitimate web searchers as browsers' homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs. This seriously affects the browsing experience. To elaborate, with a browser hijacker promoting searchiing.com installed: every new browser tab/window opened and search query typed into the URL bar - redirect to searchiing.com. Fake search engines are rarely capable of providing search results, so they tend to redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) legitimate ones. Even if the promoted web searchers can generate search results, they are typically inaccurate and/or promote untrustworthy/malicious websites. The former is the case with searchiing.com, it redirects to Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) - a genuine search engine. Furthermore, browser hijackers can restrict or deny access to the browser's settings and/or undo any permitted changes made. Therefore, recovering a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it. As mentioned in the introduction, most browser hijackers have data tracking abilities. They can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, paged viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather sensitive data extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The collected data is highly likely to contain personally identifiable information. Browser hijacker developers often monetize this information by sharing it with and/or selling it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). To summarize, presence of data-tracking software on browsers/systems can result in financial losses, severe privacy issues and even identity theft. To protect device integrity and user safety, all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay.

Searches.networksearch.handlersection.comsearches.cloud and searchsnow.com are some examples of other fake search engines. They are promoted by browser hijackers, which typically look like ordinary and useful software; e.g. Bright StartNiceTab StartPageMacAppExtensions - to name a few. Users are enticed into download/installation with offers of a wide variety of functionalities. However, the promised features are seldom operational. In fact, this applies to practically all PUAs. The only purpose of unwanted applications is to generate revenue for the developers; to users - they have no real value and can instead cause serious issues. PUAs are designed to hijack browsers, cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns and gather private information.

How did searchiing.com install on my computer?

PUAs are distributed via download/installation setups of other software. This false marketing method of packing regular products with unwanted or malicious additions - is termed "bundling". Rushed download/installation processes (e.g. ignored terms, skipped steps, used pre-set options, etc.) - increase the risk of unintentionally allowing dubious and/or bundled content into the system. Select PUAs have "official" promotional webpages, from which they can be downloaded. Intrusive ads proliferate these apps as well. Upon being clicked, they can execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Software must be researched prior to download/installation and/or purchase. It is strongly recommended to only use official and verified download channels. Untrustworthy sources, e.g. unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders - often offer deceptive and/or bundled content. Download and installation processes must be treated with caution. Therefore, it is important to read terms, study all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out from supplementary apps, tools, features and other additions. Intrusive advertisements appear legitimate, however they redirect to questionable sites (e.g. pornography, adult-dating, gambling, etc.). In case of encounters with such adverts/redirects, users must inspect the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins from it. If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
