Nebula Search browser hijacker removal instructions
What is the Nebula Search browser hijacker?
Nebula Search is dubious software categorized as a browser hijacker. It operates by making changes to browser settings to promote fake search engines. Nebula Search promotes nebulasearch.net in this manner. Additionally, this browser hijacker has data tracking capabilities, which are employed to monitor users' browsing activity. Nebula Search also adds the "Managed by your organization" feature to Google Chrome browsers. Due to the dubious techniques used to spread Nebula Search, it is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and other popular browsers are common targets of browser hijackers. This rogue software operates by assigning the addresses of bogus search engines as the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs. Nebula Search makes these modifications to browsers to promote nebulasearch.net. Therefore, with this browser hijacker installed, each new browser tab/window opened and search made via the URL bar redirects to nebulasearch.net. Fake search engines are usually unable to provide unique results, and so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) legitimate sites. The web searcher of Nebula Search (nebulasearch.net) is no exception to this, and simply redirects to Yahoo (search.yahoo.com). Furthermore, browser hijackers can restrict/deny access to browser settings and/or undo any permitted changes made. Therefore, recovering an affected browser is impossible without removal the browser hijacker. As mentioned, Nebula Search can track data. It can record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The collected data is often monetized by sharing with and/or selling to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). In summary, the presence of data-tracking software on devices can result in financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft. To protect device integrity and user safety, remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be eliminated without delay.

To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner.
StreamsSearch, AllMoviesSearch and Quick Search Tool are some examples of other browser hijackers. They may seem legitimate and harmless and typically offer various "useful" functionality. Despite how good the features promised may sound, they are rarely operational. In fact, this is true of most PUAs. The only purpose of these unwanted applications is to generate profit for the developers, whilst regular users receive no value and can instead experience serious issues. PUAs modify browsers, force-open dubious or malicious web pages, run intrusive advertisement campaigns and collect private information.
How did Nebula Search install on my computer?
PUAs are often downloaded/installed with other products. This deceptive marketing technique of packing normal software with unwanted or malicious additions is termed "bundling". Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps, etc.) increases the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into systems. Certain PUAs have "official" download pages. Intrusive ads proliferate these applications as well - when clicked, they can execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs without users' permission.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all products before download/installation and/or purchase. Use only official and verified download channels. Untrusted sources such as unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.) and other third party downloaders can offer bundled programs and content that has been modified. When downloading/installing, it is important to read the terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features and other additions. Intrusive ads may seem legitimate and innocuous, however, they often redirect to highly dubious sites (e.g. pornography, gambling, adult-dating, and so on). If you encounter advertisements and/or redirects of this kind, check the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately. If your computer is already infected with Nebula Search, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
