ConvertItSearch browser hijacker removal instructions
What is ConvertItSearch?
Typically, browser hijackers are designed to promote address of some fake search engine by changing some of the browser settings. ConvertItSearch promotes the convertitsearch.com address. Also, it is common that apps of this type are designed to collect browsing-related and/or other information. Most users download and install browser hijackers unknowingly. For this reason ConvertItSearch and other apps of this type are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
ConvertItSearch promotes convertitsearch.com by making it as an address of a homepage, default search engine and new tab. In other words, it makes sure that users would visit that address when they open a browser, new tab and enter search queries into URL bar. Convertitsearch.com redirects users to search.yahoo.com - it provides results generated by Yahoo. Convertitsearch.com does not generate individual results and that is the main reason why this search engine is called fake. Typically, address of a fake search engine can be removed from browsers settings only after uninstallation of a browser hijacker that is designed to promote it. Therefore, convertitsearch.com can be stopped from being opened on certain occasions only when ConvertItSearch is no longer installed. Another reason not to have apps of this type installed on browsers and/or computers is that they often are designed to collect various data. In most cases they target browsing data (e.g., geolocations, IP addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited websites), However, some browser hijackers are designed to collect sensitive, personal information as well. What is worse, their developers may misuse gathered information to generate revenue, for example, they may sell it to third parties (potentially cyber criminals). This could cause users problems related to online privacy, browsing safety, some of them may even become victims of identity theft.

Usually such apps are designed to promote some fake search engine (its address) and collect some data. It is worthwhile to mention that most browser hijackers are advertised as useful, legitimate apps - they supposed include some features, improve browsing experience, and/or be useful in some other way. Although, it is common that they are useless and can cause various problems. Therefore, ConvertItSearch or any other app of this type should never be downloaded and installed.
How did ConvertItSearch install on my computer?
In some cases users download and/or install PUAs through deceptive advertisements that are capable of executing certain scripts. Although, more often they download and/or install them together with other, mainly free programs. To be more precise, when PUAs are included in various download and/or installation setups. This distribution method is called "bundling". Typically, information about additionally included apps is provided in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings of setups. Users who download and/or install programs without checking (and changing) those settings download and/or install allow for PUAs to be downloaded and/or installed too.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is recommended to always check download and/or installation setups "Advanced", "Custom" for offers to download and/or install unwanted software before completing downloads and installations. Also, it is advised to download programs (and files) only from official, (trustworthy websites) and via direct links. Third party downloaders, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., torrent clients, eMule), unofficial websites, etc., can be and often are used to distribute potentially unwanted, sometimes even malicious programs. The same applies to third party installers. Intrusive advertisements that appear on shady pages should not be trusted (clicked) as well. It is common that such ads are designed to open shady websites, also in some cases they can be designed to cause download, or even installation of some unwanted application. If there are any unwanted apps (extensions, add-ons or plug-ins) installed on a browser, then they should be removed from it. The same applies to software of this kind that is installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with ConvertItSearch, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
