How to remove PowerSuite from Mac?

What is PowerSuite?

PowerSuite is advertised as a tool that is designed to free up disk space, remove junk files and duplicate files, and unwanted applications. However, it is very likely that its developers use questionable methods to distribute it (e.g., a marketing method called "bundling"). Therefore, PowerSuite is categorized as a potentially unwanted application (PUA).

PowerSuite unwanted application

PowerSuite includes tools called "Clean Up", "Startup Boost", "Find Duplicate Files", "App Uninstaller" and "Eraser" and "Automatic Cleanup". As mentioned in the introduction, these tools supposed to free up disk space, remove unnecessary junk files and duplicate files, and unwanted apps. However, none of these tools can be used if PowerSuite is not activated (purchased). It is worthwhile to mention that apps that are categorized as PUAs are likely to perform fake scans/generate fake results. In other words, it is common that they are designed to trick users into paying money for their registration/activation. It is unknown whether PowerSuite functions like one of those apps, however, there is such possibility. Another problem with many apps like PowerSuite is that developers distribute them together with other PUAs, for instance, various browser hijackers, adware-type applications. Browser hijackers are designed to promote fake search engines (their addresses) by changing certain browser settings. Adware-type apps are designed serve advertisements. For example, coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups, and other types of ads. Both browser hijackers and adware-type apps can be designed to function as data collectors that gather browsing data like geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, IP addresses. In some cases they can access sensitive details as well. What is worse, collected details could be misused to generate revenue by selling them to third parties (potentially cyber criminals), or in some other ways.

A couple of examples of other apps that are categorized as PUAs are Osx Uninstaller, Umate Mac Cleaner, Mac Cleaner. As a rule, they are advertised as tools that are designed to fix errors, remove unwanted data, files, uninstall apps, remove viruses, etc. However, not all of them function as they supposed to. As mentioned in the introduction, they are called PUAs because quite often they get downloaded and installed by users unintentionally.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

Most of the times users download and/or install PUAs when they download and/or install programs that have those apps included in their download and/or installation setups as extra offers. This distribution method is called "bundling". It works when users do not change "Advanced", "Custom" or other settings of setups (or untick certain checkboxes) before completing download and/or installation processes. In other words, when they do not decline offers to download and/or install included apps. Also, sometimes unwanted downloads and/or installations can be caused by clicking deceptive advertisements that are designed to execute certain scripts. It is worthwhile to mention that in most cases such ads appear on untrustworthy pages.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is recommended not to use Peer-to-Peer networks (like eMule, torrent clients), unofficial websites, third party downloaders, installers, etc., to download or install programs (and files). It is because they tend to be used as tools to distribute unwanted, sometimes even malicious software. Programs and files should be downloaded from official websites and via direct links. Download and installation setups that have checkboxes or settings like "Advanced", "Manual, "Custom", should be checked for offers to download and/or install unwanted apps. It should be done before completing download and/or installation processes. Advertisements on unreliable, questionable pages can be designed to open pages that are not trustworthy or execute scripts that are designed cause unwanted downloads and/or installations. Therefore, it is advised not to click the aforementioned ads. All unwanted, suspicious or unknown extensions, add-ons or plug-ins installed that are already installed on a web browser should be removed. The same applies to software of this kind that is installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
