How to remove VideoBoxApp from Mac?

What is VideoBoxApp?

VideoBoxApp is described by its developer as a high-quality standard video player. The problem with this app is that it is distributed using a fake Adobe Flash Player installer. It means that there is a high chance that if there are users who have installed the VideoBoxApp app, then they do not know how exactly they installed this app. Apps that users download and install unknowingly, unintentionally are called potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). It is important to mention that PUAs that are distributed using fake installers often come bundled together with other apps of this kind, e.g., adware, browser hijackers.

VideoBoxApp adware

The VideoBoxApp application itself is not likely to be harmful or dangerous. The bigger problem is not the VideoBoxApp but the apps that may be distributed together with it. It is very likely that the installer for VideoBoxApp has some adware or browser hijacker included in it. Adware is a type of unwanted software that generates revenue for its developer by generating advertisements. Typically, adware displays annoying pop-up ads, banners, coupons, surveys, or other ads that are used to promote questionable websites. It is important to know that adware can generate ads capable of causing unwanted downloads, installations of unwanted applications. Therefore, ads that appear in the user interface, on visited websites, etc., and come from installed adware cannot be trusted.

A browser hijacker is a type of PUA that changes the browser's settings to promote a fake search engine (its address). Usually, such app hijacks a browser by changing the address of a default search engine, homepage and new tab to an address of a certain fake search engine and prevents users from undoing these changes unless it is no longer installed on a browser. Search engines that browser hijackers promote are called fake because they do not generate their own results (they display results generated by some other legitimate search engine like Google, Yahoo). However, some fake search engines generate their own results that include links to shady pages, deceptive advertisements, etc.

It is noteworthy that both adware-type apps and browser hijackers can be monetized by designing them to collect IP addresses, geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, and other details of this kind, or even sensitive information such as passwords saved on a browser, credit card details, etc. Therefore, it is not safe to have any browser hijackers and adware-type apps installed on browsers or computers. If an app of one or another type is already installed, then it should be removed. The same should be done with VideoBoxApp. Another app that shares similarities with the VideoBoxApp app is called FPMPlayer.

How did VideoBoxApp install on my computer?

VideoBoxApp is distributed through a fake installer for Adobe Flash Player. It is important to remember that fake installers can be used to trick users into installing not only PUAs but also malicious programs (e.g., ransomware, Trojans). Another popular way to distribute apps like VideoBoxApp (and browser hijackers, adware) is to bundle them together with some freeware (software that is freely available for download). In such cases, freeware downloaders, installers have PUAs included in them as additional offers. Typically, unwanted offers can be declined via "Advanced", "Custom", or other settings, or checkboxes that those downloaders, installers have. If users finish downloads, installations without changing default settings, they agree with all extra offers (unwanted downloads, installations). Sometimes PUAs can be distributed through deceptive ads - by designing ads to execute certain scripts. However, such ads cannot cause unwanted downloads, installations if they are not clicked.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Applications, files should not be downloaded using sources, channels such as unofficial pages, third party downloaders, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., torrent clients, eMule), etc., or installed using third party installers. The safest way to download software is to do so using official pages and direct download links. Downloaders and installers should always be checked for "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings (or checkboxes). More precisely, they should be checked for an option to opt out unwanted offers. Advertisements that appear on shady pages should not be clicked as well - those ads can cause downloads, installations of unwanted applications, or simply to open untrustworthy sites. If there are any unknown, unwanted, suspicious extensions, plug-ins, or add-ons installed on a browser (or programs of this kind installed on the operating system), then they should be uninstalled. If your computer is already infected with VideoBoxApp, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
