How to remove searchfox.me from web browser settings

Also Known As: searchfox.me browser hijacker
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is searchfox.me?

searchfox.me is the address of a fake search engine that appears in browser settings after installation of a browser hijacker. The app that changes settings to promote searchfox.me is distributed via a fake installer designed to appear like the installer for Adobe Flash Player.

Generally, users download and install browser hijackers, and other apps that are distributed through fake installers (or using other deceptive methods), inadvertently. Therefore, these rogue apps are classified as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).

searchfox.me browser hijacker on a Mac computer

Research shows that searchfox.me redirects users to webcrawler.com, a legitimate search engine. Like most fake search engines, searchfox.me does not generate results and users simply see results generated by another search engine.

Not all fake search engines redirect users to legitimate search engines. In some cases, they can generate results that include dubious information, or they redirect users to other bogus addresses.

You are advised against using any fake search engine. Use a legitimate site such as Google, Yahoo, or Bing.

As mentioned, fake search engines often appear in web browser settings after installation of a browser hijacker. Typically, browser hijackers change settings such as the default search engine, homepage, and new tab (changing them to the address of a fake search engine such as searchfox.me). These rogue URLs cannot be removed or changed to another address as long as the browser hijacker is installed. Therefore, to remove searchfox.me from settings, it is necessary to first uninstall the browser hijacker.

Browser hijackers used to promote fake search engines can also collect various information. They target details relating to internet browsing activities. For example, IP addresses, geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited/opened sites, and so on. They might also collect sensitive details. Furthermore, the developers use gathered information for marketing purposes, sell it to third parties (potentially cyber criminals) or monetize it in other ways.

Therefore, you are strongly advised to remove PUAs from browsers/computers.

There are many fake search engines on the web. Some examples are searches.network, searches.cloud, and cybersearch.xyz. They redirect users to webcrawler.com. Other fake search engines can redirect users to bogus websites.

Most fake search engines are promoted through browser hijackers, applications that most users download and install inadvertently. Remove all PUAs from browsers and operating systems immediately.

How did searchfox.me install on my computer?

The app promoting searchfox.me is distributed using a fake Adobe Flash Player installer. Fake installers are often used to distribute malicious programs, including Trojans, ransomware.

PUAs are distributed via download/installation set-ups of other products. This deceptive marketing tactic of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".

Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and settings, etc.) increases the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system.

Some PUAs have "official" download sites. Intrusive advertisements proliferate these applications as well. Once clicked, they can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' consent.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

Download software and files from official websites and via direct links. It is not safe to use torrent clients, eMule (or other Peer-to-Peer networks), third party downloaders, unofficial websites or other sources of this kind.

Avoid third party installers. Check "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings, and decline offers to download or install unwanted software. Do not click ads that are displayed on dubious websites, since they can open other untrusted websites or even cause unwanted downloads and installations.

Remove any unwanted, suspicious applications (extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins) that are installed on the browser. The same should be applied to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system.

Regularly scan your computer with reputable antivirus or anti-spyware software and keep this software up to date.

If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
