"Alibaba email virus" removal guide
What is the fake "Alibaba" email?
"Alibaba email virus" refers to a malware-proliferating spam campaign. This term defines a large-scale operation during which deceptive/scam emails are sent by the thousand. The letters distributed through this campaign are disguised as notifications from Alibaba Group - a Chinese multinational technology company dealing in e-commerce, retail, Internet, and technology. These fake notifications inform recipients that their product has been ordered/purchased. However, instead of containing information about the nonexistent purchase, the attached file triggers download/installation of the Snake Keylogger - upon opening. This malicious program is designed to record keystrokes (i.e., typed information). Therefore, the "Alibaba" scam emails pose a serious threat to recipients' privacy and may cause a variety of severe issues.
The fake "Alibaba" emails (subject/title "NEW PO-0403 From Guangzhou Bison Via Alibaba.com"; may vary) state that recipients have an order of their Alibaba-hosted product. The scam letters then name the fictitious buyer and instruct recipients to download and review the attached purchase order. It must be emphasized that despite their legitimate appearance - these emails are fraudulent and in no way associated with the genuine Alibaba Group. As mentioned in the introduction, when opened - the email attachment initiates Snake Keylogger's infection process.
The Snake Keylogger is a piece of malicious software primarily designed to record keystrokes. This feature endangers the privacy/confidentiality of any and all typed data. However, this keylogger targets other information as well. It can extract data from certain browsers and email clients. Snake's other functions include taking screenshots and accessing clipboard-stored data (i.e., information within the copy/paste buffer). Malware of this type is usually used to obtain log-in credentials (i.e., IDs, email addresses, usernames, and passwords) of various online accounts and platforms. How this can be used depends on the hijacked services themselves and/or the content stored therein. Financial information (e.g., bank account details, credit card numbers, etc.) is also of particular interest to cyber criminals. Through it, they may be able to make fraudulent transactions and/or online purchases. To summarize, by trusting the "Alibaba" scam emails - users can experience system infections, severe privacy issues, significant financial losses, and even identity theft. If it is known or suspected that the system has been infected with the Snake Keylogger (or other malware) - an anti-virus must be used to remove it immediately.

How to avoid installation of malware?
To avoid infecting the device via spam mail, it is advised against opening suspicious/irrelevant emails - especially any attachments or links found in them. It is also recommended to use Microsoft Office versions released after 2010. However, malware is proliferated using other techniques as well. Malicious programs are distributed through untrustworthy download channels (e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc.), fake updaters, and illegal software activation ("cracking") tools. Therefore, it is important to use only official and verified download sources. Furthermore, software must be updated and activated using functions/tools provided by genuine developers. To ensure device and user safety, it is crucial to have a reputable anti-virus/anti-spyware installed and updated. These programs have to be used to run regular system scans and remove detected threats and issues. If you've already opened "Alibaba email virus" attachment, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate infiltrated malware.

How to remove malware manually?
Manual malware removal is a complicated task - usually it is best to allow antivirus or anti-malware programs to do this automatically. To remove this malware we recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows. If you wish to remove malware manually, the first step is to identify the name of the malware that you are trying to remove. Here is an example of a suspicious program running on a user's computer:
If you checked the list of programs running on your computer, for example, using task manager, and identified a program that looks suspicious, you should continue with these steps:
Download a program called Autoruns. This program shows auto-start applications, Registry, and file system locations:
Restart your computer into Safe Mode:
Windows XP and Windows 7 users: Start your computer in Safe Mode. Click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart, click OK. During your computer start process, press the F8 key on your keyboard multiple times until you see the Windows Advanced Option menu, and then select Safe Mode with Networking from the list.

Windows 8 users: Start Windows 8 is Safe Mode with Networking - Go to Windows 8 Start Screen, type Advanced, in the search results select Settings. Click Advanced startup options, in the opened "General PC Settings" window, select Advanced startup. Click the "Restart now" button. Your computer will now restart into the "Advanced Startup options menu". Click the "Troubleshoot" button, and then click the "Advanced options" button. In the advanced option screen, click "Startup settings". Click the "Restart" button. Your PC will restart into the Startup Settings screen. Press F5 to boot in Safe Mode with Networking.

In the "choose an option" window click on the "Troubleshoot", next select "Advanced options". In the advanced options menu select "Startup Settings" and click on the "Restart" button. In the following window you should click the "F5" button on your keyboard. This will restart your operating system in safe mode with networking.

Extract the downloaded archive and run the Autoruns.exe file.
In the Autoruns application, click "Options" at the top and uncheck "Hide Empty Locations" and "Hide Windows Entries" options. After this procedure, click the "Refresh" icon.
Check the list provided by the Autoruns application and locate the malware file that you want to eliminate.
You should write down its full path and name. Note that some malware hides process names under legitimate Windows process names. At this stage, it is very important to avoid removing system files. After you locate the suspicious program you wish to remove, right click your mouse over its name and choose "Delete".
After removing the malware through the Autoruns application (this ensures that the malware will not run automatically on the next system startup), you should search for the malware name on your computer. Be sure to enable hidden files and folders before proceeding. If you find the filename of the malware, be sure to remove it.
Reboot your computer in normal mode. Following these steps should remove any malware from your computer. Note that manual threat removal requires advanced computer skills. If you do not have these skills, leave malware removal to antivirus and anti-malware programs. These steps might not work with advanced malware infections. As always it is best to prevent infection than try to remove malware later. To keep your computer safe, install the latest operating system updates and use antivirus software.
To be sure your computer is free of malware infections, we recommend scanning it with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
