What is Crackonosh malware?
It is popular among cybercriminals to distribute malware by hiding it inside cracked software. It is known that Crackonosh is distributed alongside cracked popular games and other software. The main purpose of Crackonosh is to install the XMRIG miner and mine cryptocurrencies for the attackers.
Crackonosh malware in detail
Once the installer of cracked software is executed, it drops an installer and a script that modifies the Windows Registry to disable hibernation mode and run Crackonosh in Safe Mode on the next system startup. By running in Safe Mode, Crackonosh protects itself from being detected and analyzed by disabling Windows Update and Windows Defender or even uninstalling installed antivirus programs (including Avast, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton).
It deletes system log files (and serviceinstaller.msi. maintenance.vbs files) to cover its tracks as well. Additionally, Crackonosh can stop Windows Update services and replaces the Windows Security icon with its own (fake) icon, a green system tray icon. In some cases, computers infected with this malware could show error messages notifying about problems with the maintenance.vbs file.
As mentioned in the first paragraph, the main purpose of the Crackonosh mining malware is to install the XMRig cryptocurrency miner. Cryptomining software uses computer resources (CPU, GPU) to solve complex mathematical problems/mine digital cryptocurrency.
It is known that cybercriminals behind Crackonosh monetize this malware by utilizing infected computers to mine Monero cryptocurrency. The cryptocurrency miner distributed via Crackonosh already mined about two million dollars worth of Monero for the hackers.
It is worth mentioning that installed cryptocurrency miners can slow computers down, cause system crashes, unexpected shutdowns, wear out components (hardware) through overuse, increase the electricity bill. Therefore, cryptocurrency miners that have been installed unknowingly should be uninstalled as soon as possible.

How did Crackonosh infiltrate my computer?
Research shows that Crackonosh is distributed using installers of cracked games such as Call of Cthulhu, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Fallout 4 GOTY, Far Cry 5, Grand Theft Auto V, Jurassic World Evolution, NBA 2K19, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, The Sims 4, The Sims 4 Seasons, We Happy Few. Although, it is likely that this malware could be distributed using installers of other cracked games and programs as well.
Typically, cracked software can be downloaded through torrenting platforms and file distribution websites like Google Drive. The infection chain starts when users launch an infected executable file (installer).

Restart your computer into Safe Mode:
Windows XP and Windows 7 users: Start your computer in Safe Mode. Click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart, click OK. During your computer start process, press the F8 key on your keyboard multiple times until you see the Windows Advanced Option menu, and then select Safe Mode with Networking from the list.

Windows 8 users: Start Windows 8 is Safe Mode with Networking - Go to Windows 8 Start Screen, type Advanced, in the search results select Settings. Click Advanced startup options, in the opened "General PC Settings" window, select Advanced startup.
Click the "Restart now" button. Your computer will now restart into the "Advanced Startup options menu". Click the "Troubleshoot" button, and then click the "Advanced options" button.
In the advanced option screen, click "Startup settings". Click the "Restart" button. Your PC will restart into the Startup Settings screen. Press F5 to boot in Safe Mode with Networking.

Windows 10 users: Click the Windows logo and select the Power icon. In the opened menu click "Restart" while holding "Shift" button on your keyboard. In the "choose an option" window click on the "Troubleshoot", next select "Advanced options".
In the advanced options menu select "Startup Settings" and click on the "Restart" button. In the following window you should click the "F5" button on your keyboard. This will restart your operating system in safe mode with networking.

Extract the downloaded archive and run the Autoruns.exe file.
In the Autoruns application, click "Options" at the top and uncheck "Hide Empty Locations" and "Hide Windows Entries" options. After this procedure, click the "Refresh" icon.
Check the list provided by the Autoruns application and locate the malware file that you want to eliminate.
You should write down its full path and name. Note that some malware hides process names under legitimate Windows process names. At this stage, it is very important to avoid removing system files.
After you locate the suspicious program you wish to remove, right click your mouse over its name and choose "Delete".
After removing the malware through the Autoruns application (this ensures that the malware will not run automatically on the next system startup), you should search for the malware name on your computer.
Be sure to enable hidden files and folders before proceeding. If you find the filename of the malware, be sure to remove it.
Reboot your computer in normal mode. Following these steps should remove any malware from your computer. Note that manual threat removal requires advanced computer skills.
