How to remove the GameSearchNow browser hijacker?

Also Known As: gamesearchnow.com redirect
Damage level: Medium

What is GameSearchNow?

GameSearchNow is a piece of rogue software that modifies browser settings to promote the gamesearchnow.com fake search engine. Due to this, it is classified as a browser hijacker. GameSearchNow likely spies on users' browsing activity, as that is common for such software. Since most users download/install browser hijackers unintentionally, they are also categorized as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications).

GameSearchNow browser hijacker in detail

Browser hijackers assign fake web searcher addresses as browsers' homepage, new tab/window, and default search engine URLs. GameSearchNow operates in this manner as well. Therefore, with it installed: new browser tabs/windows opened and search queries typed into the URL bar - redirect to gamesearchnow.com.

Illegitimate search engines typically cannot provide search results, so they redirect (or cause redirection chains leading) to genuine ones. This also applies to gamesearchnow.com; it redirects to the legitimate Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) search engine and searchlee.com (may vary). While searchlee.com can generate search results, they are inaccurate and may endorse harmful content - hence, it is deemed a fake search engine.

Furthermore, browser hijackers can reset any changes users try to make to their browsers. Alternatively, they can restrict or deny access to the browser settings. Therefore, restoring a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it.

Most browser hijackers have data tracking abilities. Information of interest includes: URLs visited, webpages viewed, search queries typed, IP addresses/ geolocations, personally identifiable details, and so forth. The collected data is then shared with and/or sold to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

In summary, the presence of data-tracking software on devices can lead to serious privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user privacy, all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be eliminated immediately upon detection.

Browser hijackers in general

GameSearchItTopSearchConverters, and Movie Finder are a couple examples of browser hijackers. They appear ordinary and harmless. Users are enticed into download/installation with offers of various functionalities. However, the advertised features are seldom operational.

In fact, practically all PUAs promise nonexistent functions. The sole aim of unwanted apps is to generate revenue for the developers; functionality and user safety are irrelevant. PUAs are designed to hijack browsers, cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), and collect private data.

How did GameSearchNow install on my computer?

PUAs can be downloaded/installed together with other programs. "Bundling" is the term used to describe this false marketing technique of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions. These supplements can be left unmentioned entirely, or they can be hidden within the "Custom/Advanced" download/install settings.

By rushing through download/installation processes (e.g., ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using "Easy/Express" settings, etc.) - users risk inadvertently allowing bundled content into their devices, thereby endangering the systems with potential infections.

Intrusive advertisements are used to proliferate PUAs as well. Once clicked on, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without user consent. Some PUAs have "official" promotional sites from which they can be downloaded.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is recommended to research software before download/installation and/or purchase. Additionally, downloads must be performed from official/verified sources. Untrustworthy download channels, e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - commonly offer bundled content.

When downloading/installing, it is important to read terms, explore possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out from additional apps, tools, functions, etc. Intrusive adverts appear legitimate; however, they redirect to highly questionable webpages (e.g., gambling, adult-dating, pornography, and so forth).

In case of encounters with ads and/or redirects of this kind, the system must be checked and all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - removed from it without delay. If your computer is already infected with GameSearchNow, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
