More about Whisper Stealer

Whisper Stealer steals passwords, cookies, autofill data, and credit card details from Chromium browsers. It also steals the same information (excluding credit card details) from Gecko browsers. Moreover, it can extract data from more than thirty crypto wallets and collect Discord tokens and Telegram sessions.

Whisper Stealer operates as an in-memory stealer - it resides only in memory, which means that it can remain undetected. Also, it can avoid being tested on virtual machines. Cybercriminals can use Whisper Stealer to steal identities, personal accounts (including crypto wallets, banking accounts, Discord, and Telegram accounts), and more.

Stolen accounts could be used to make fraudulent purchases and transactions, deliver malware, send spam, and other purposes. Computers infected with the Whisper Stealer malware should be scanned with antivirus software as soon as possible.

Information stealers in general

Typically, cybercriminals use information stealers to obtain passwords, credit card details, and other information that could be used to hijack various accounts, steal identities, make monetary transactions, etc. More examples of information stealers are ColdStealer, FFDroider, MetaStealer.

How did Whisper Stealer infiltrate my computer?

Most threat actors distribute malware via emails, Trojans (another type of malware), fake software updating tools, cracked software download pages, or other unreliable sources for downloading files/programs. Their goal is to trick users into executing malware by themselves.

Emails used to trick recipients into infecting computers contain malicious attachments or links. In most cases, cybercriminals behind such emails pretend to be legitimate organizations, companies, etc. Files that most threat actors use to distribute malware are executables, archives (like ZIP, RAR), JavaScript files, Microsoft Office, and PDF documents.

Examples of untrustworthy sources for downloading software (or files) that can be used to distribute malicious software are Peer-to-Peer networks, freeware download websites, free file hosting websites, and third-party downloaders.

How to avoid installation of malware?

Do not trust irrelevant emails sent from suspicious addresses, especially when they contain links or attachments. Emails of this kind usually are used to deliver malware. Download files and software from trustworthy sources (official pages, platforms). Avoid opening downloads from other sources.

Keep the operating system and installed programs up to date. Update (and activate) them using tools provided by their official developers. Keep your computer protected with reputable antivirus software. If you believe that your computer is already infected, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate infiltrated malware.

manual malware removal step 4In the Autoruns application, click "Options" at the top and uncheck "Hide Empty Locations" and "Hide Windows Entries" options. After this procedure, click the "Refresh" icon.

Refresh Autoruns application results

manual malware removal step 5Check the list provided by the Autoruns application and locate the malware file that you want to eliminate.

You should write down its full path and name. Note that some malware hides process names under legitimate Windows process names. At this stage, it is very important to avoid removing system files. After you locate the suspicious program you wish to remove, right click your mouse over its name and choose "Delete".

Delete malware in Autoruns

After removing the malware through the Autoruns application (this ensures that the malware will not run automatically on the next system startup), you should search for the malware name on your computer. Be sure to enable hidden files and folders before proceeding. If you find the filename of the malware, be sure to remove it.

Search for malware and delete it

Reboot your computer in normal mode. Following these steps should remove any malware from your computer. Note that manual threat removal requires advanced computer skills. If you do not have these skills, leave malware removal to antivirus and anti-malware programs.

These steps might not work with advanced malware infections. As always it is best to prevent infection than try to remove malware later. To keep your computer safe, install the latest operating system updates and use antivirus software. To be sure your computer is free of malware infections, we recommend scanning it with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
