How to remove RoundEmporium adware from the operating system

Also Known As: Ads by RoundEmporium
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is RoundEmporium?

While performing a routine inspection of new submissions to VirusTotal, our research team discovered the RoundEmporium rogue application. Our analysis of this app revealed that it operates as advertising-supported software (adware). Additionally, we learned that RoundEmporium belongs to the AdLoad malware family.

RoundEmporium adware

RoundEmporium adware overview

Adware is designed to display advertisements on visited websites and/or other interfaces. However, this software may require certain conditions to run intrusive advert campaigns (e.g., compatible browser/system specs or user geolocation, visits to particular sites, etc.). Regardless of whether RoundEmporium delivers ads - its presence endangers device and user safety.

Adware-displayed adverts promote online scams, unreliable/hazardous websites and software, and even malware. Additionally, some intrusive advertisements can make stealthy downloads/installations - once clicked on.

Note that any legitimate products encountered through these adverts are most likely endorsed in this manner by scammers abusing their affiliate programs to obtain illegitimate commissions.

RoundEmporium might have browser hijacker functionalities, as they are common for AdLoad adware. However, this app did not exhibit any during testing.

Furthermore, RoundEmporium likely has data tracking abilities. Targeted information may include: browsing and search engine histories, account log-in credentials, personally identifiable details, financial/banking data, etc. The gathered information is typically monetized via sale to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

To summarize, the presence of software like RoundEmporium on devices can result in system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples

ActivateOptimization, HelperProtocolStandartSync, and ManagerTemplate are merely some examples of the aware-type apps that we have inspected recently. Advertising-supported software usually looks legitimate and offers "handy" functionalities. However, these features rarely work as advertised, and in most cases - they do not work at all.

How did RoundEmporium install on my computer?

Adware is proliferated using various dubious and deceptive methods. It can be bundled with (packed alongside) regular software/media. Download from untrustworthy sources (e.g., unofficial and freeware websites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and rushed installations (e.g., skipped steps/sections, etc.) - increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the system.

Intrusive adverts are also used to spread advertising-supported software. Once clicked on, some of these ads can execute scripts to make downloads/installations without user permission.

Adware is promoted through questionable download webpages and scam sites as well. These websites are primarily accessed via redirects caused by mistyped URLs, pages that use rogue advertising networks, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or adware (with browser force-opening capabilities). Additionally, fake Adobe Flash Player updaters/installers are used in distribution.

How to avoid installation of adware?

We strongly advise researching software and downloading only from official and verified channels. Furthermore, when installing, it is important to read terms, study possible options, and use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings to opt-out of all additions.

Another recommendation is to exercise caution when browsing - since illegitimate and malicious content usually appears harmless. For example, intrusive advertisements look ordinary and innocuous, yet they redirect to highly questionable sites (e.g., gambling, adult-dating, pornography, etc.).

In case of encounters with such ads/redirects, check the system and immediately remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with RoundEmporium, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.

What does adware do?

Adware stands for advertising-supported software. It is designed to enable the placement of third-party graphical content (advertisements) on visited websites and/or other interfaces. Additionally, some types can force-open webpages and gather private information.

How do adware developers generate revenue?

Adware generates most of the profit through affiliate programs by promoting various websites, applications, products, services, and so forth. The developers might earn commission from ad clicks, site visits, file downloads, product purchases, service subscriptions, or similar.

Will Combo Cleaner remove RoundEmporium adware?

Yes, Combo Cleaner is capable of scanning computers and eliminating installed adware-type applications. Note that manual removal (unaided by security software) might not be ideal.
