What is karatoh?
Developed by SuperWeb LLC, Karatoh is a potentially unwanted browser extension claiming to improve users' Internet browsing experience by enabling coupons, comparison shopping, and adding other useful features. This may seem a legitimate browser add-on, however, it is considered to be adware.
Karatoh uses a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional applications together with the chosen software) to install on browsers without users' consent.
Following successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome, Karatoh generates various intrusive online advertisements including interstitial, transitional, banner, search, text-link, and full-page ads.
Furthermore, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since this rogue browser plug-in records various software and hardware information such as URLs visited, search queries entered, pages viewed, IP addresses, unique identifier numbers, and other similar information.
This behavior may lead to serious privacy issues, identity theft, or malware infections. At time of research, SuperWeb LLC has released over one hundred rogue browser extensions identical to Karatoh including AtuZi, Sizlsearch, and Gerbilio.
This company releases identical browser add-ons under different names to avoid the detection by legitimate anti-spyware and anti-virus programs. Neither Karatoh, nor any other of these extensions add any real value for the user. The main purpose of these rogue browser plug-ins is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements.
Most adware such as Karatoh is distributed via small programs called 'download managers' within freeware download websites such as download.com, soft32.com, and softonic.com. These websites use download managers to monetize their free services by offering installation of promoted browser extensions together with the chosen free software.
In most cases, careless download and installation of freeware results in adware or malware infections. This situation can be prevented by closely inspecting each step of the free software download process and declining installation of any additional applications offered.
If you are installing downloaded software, choose the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Regular' - this will reveal any hidden applications attempting infiltration, and you will be able to decline them.
Users who have installed Karatoh and observe "Ads by Karatoh", "Powered by Karatoh", and "Karatoh Deals" when browsing the Internet, should follow this removal guide to eliminate it from their Internet browsers.
