Lights Off! virus removal instructions
What is Lights Off!?
Created by Coffee and Comfort Apps LLC, Lights Off is a rogue browser plug-in claiming to allow users to adjust computer screen lights while watching online videos. Although this may seem legitimate browser functionality, be aware that Lights Off is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted application. This rogue browser extension employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software) to install on Internet browsers without users' consent. Following successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome, Lights Off generates intrusive online advertisement and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
These intrusive advertisements include pop-up, text-link, in-text, banner, and interstitial ads. Clicking them is likely to cause high-risk adware or malware infections, and furthermore, this rogue browser add-on continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity by recording various software and hardware information that may be personally identifiable. For example: operating systems, browser types, cookies, URLs visited, pages viewed, language settings, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, unique identifier numbers, geographic locations, and other similar details. This behavior may lead to serious privacy issues or identity theft. Therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate Lights Off from your Internet browsers. In addition, there are many rogue browser extensions similar to Lights Off including Movie Wizard, Theater Mode, and TV Wizard. These plug-ins are useless to the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements.
Commonly, users install adware during download of free software via small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites such as soft32.com, softonic.com, download.com, etc. Download managers are used to monetize these websites' free services by offering installation of promoted 'legitimate' browser add-ons together with the chosen free software. Thus, careless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections. To prevent installation of Lights Out, or other similar adware, express caution when downloading free software and never accept installation of any additional applications offered. If you are installing downloaded software, select the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options - this will reveal any hidden applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them. Users who have installed the Lights Off virus, and observe intrusive online advertisements when surfing the Internet, should follow this removal guide to eliminate the adware from their browsers.
