Savings-Hero Adware

Also Known As: Ads by Savings-Hero
Type: Adware
Damage level: Medium

What is Savings-Hero?

Created by Engaging Apps, the Savings-Hero rogue browser extension claims to save time and money by enabling comparison shopping, coupons, and displaying discounts/special deals available within online shopping websites. Although this functionality may seem useful and legitimate, be aware that Savings-Hero is categorized as a potentially unwanted application or adware.

This rogue browser add-on employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of potentially unwanted applications together with the chosen software) to install on Internet browsers without users' consent.

Following successful infiltration to Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, Savings-Hero generates various intrusive online advertisements including banner, pop-under, coupon, interstitial, sponsored link, and targeted video ads. There is a high probability that clicking these advertisements will cause high-risk adware or malware infections.

Savings-Hero adware

In addition, Savings-Hero monitors users' Internet browsing activity by recording various software and hardware information, which may be personally identifiable. For example: Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, unique identifier numbers, geographic locations, URLs visited, pages viewed, cookies, and other details.

This behavior may result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate Savings-Hero from your Internet browsers.

Furthermore, be aware that Savings-Hero is similar to other rogue browser add-ons (such as Shopping AssistantEnhanceEmpireCoupon Waterfall, and so on), which claim to improve users' Internet browsing experience by enabling certain functions.

These browser extensions are useless to the user - their purpose is to generate income by the display of intrusive online advertisements.

Commonly, Internet users inadvertently install adware such as Savings-Hero when downloading free software via small programs called 'download clients' on freeware download websites such as soft32.com, softonic.com, and download.com

Most of these websites employ download clients as a monetization tool for their free services, since they offer installation of advertised 'legitimate' browser plug-ins together with the chosen free software. Thus, careless download and installation of freeware risks computer infection with adware or malware.

To avoid this situation, be attentive when downloading free software and decline any offers to install additional programs together with the chosen freeware. In addition, if you are installing downloaded software, choose the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and enable you to decline them.

If you have already installed Savings-Hero and observe intrusive online advertisements, follow the guide below to eliminate this adware from your Internet browsers.
