What is Zombie News?
Developed by Time Lapse Solutions, Zombie News is a dubious browser extension claiming to warn Internet users of impending 'zombie invasions'. Zombie News employs a deceptive marketing method called 'bundling' to install on Internet browsers without users' consent.
Bundling is stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software, and thus, most users infect their computers with Zombie News, or other similar adware, during download of free software from freeware download websites.
Following successful infiltration on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome), Zombie News generates intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
These intrusive advertisements include banner, interstitial, in-text, and other similar ads. It is highly probable that clicking these advertisements will cause high-risk adware or malware infections. Furthermore, this potentially unwanted browser add-on continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity by recording various information that is likely to be personally identifiable.
For example: Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, unique identifier numbers, operating systems, browser types, search queries entered, website URLs visited, pages viewed, and other similar details. Although this browser extension may seem useful and legitimate, be aware that it is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
The behavior of this rogue browser add-on may result in serious privacy issues or identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate Zombie News from your Internet browsers.
Zombie News is similar to other PUPs that use bundling as an installation method. Examples include: Zombie Alert, Websteroids, Tube Dimmer, Radsteroids, among many others. None of these add any real value for the user - their purpose is to generate income by the display of intrusive online advertisements.
Most users infect their computers with Zombie News via small programs called 'download clients' employed by freeware download websites including soft32.com, softonic.com, download.com, and many others.
Download clients are used by these websites as a free service monetization tool since they offer installation of promoted (according to the developers, '100% virus-free') browser plug-ins together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections.
Installation of Zombie News, or other similar PUPs, can be prevented by closely inspecting each step of the free software download process and never accepting installation of any additional programs offered.
If you are installing downloaded software, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Regular' - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them.
If you have already installed Zombie News adware, and observe intrusive online advertisements while surfing the internet, follow this removal guide to uninstall this PUP from your Internet browsers.
