What is AppEnable?
Created by SuperWeb LLC, AppEnable is a rogue browser extension claiming to improve the Internet browsing experience by enabling comparison shopping, coupons, and other functions. Although this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, be aware that AppEnable is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
The developers of this rogue application employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software) to install AppEnable on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users' consent.
After successful infiltration, AppEnable generates numerous intrusive online advertisements such as search, pop-up, banner, interstitial, transitional, and full-page ads. There is a high probability that clicking advertisements generated by AppEnable will lead to high-risk adware or malware infections.
In addition, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since this PUP records various software and hardware information including IP addresses (to determine geographic locations), website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered, unique identifier numbers, and other similar data that is likely to be personally identifiable.
None of these applications provide any real value for the user - this company intentionally releases identical browser add-ons under different names to prevent detection by legitimate anti-virus and anti-spyware suites - the purpose of these applications is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads and sharing collected information with third parties. Therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate AppEnable adware from your Internet browsers.
Research shows that most adware is distributed via small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites such as download.com, softonic.com, soft32.com and many others.
Download managers are used to monetize these websites' free services and traffic by offering installation of promoted (according to developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') browser plug-ins together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often leads to adware or malware infections.
This situation can be prevented by closely inspecting each step of the free software download process and clicking 'Decline' if installation of any additional applications is offered.
Furthermore, if you are installing downloaded software, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Regular' - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out.
If your computer is infected with AppEnable, and you observe 'Ads by AppEnable', 'Powered by AppEnable', and 'AppEnable Ads' while surfing the Internet, follow the removal guide provided to uninstall this adware from your system.
