What is JokeFanatic?
Developed by Mindspark Interactive Network Inc, JokeFanatic is a potentially unwanted program claiming to provide users with various jokes, pranks, and other fun-related content. On initial inspection, this browser plug-in may seem legitimate and useful, however, be aware that JokeFanatic is considered to be a browser hijacker or redirect virus.
These associations are made since JokeFanatic employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to install on Internet browsers without users' permission.
Bundling allows developers to stealthily distribute their applications together with other software, and therefore, most users inadvertently install JokeFanatic when downloading free software from freeware download websites.
Most popular freeware download websites such as download.com, softonic.com, and soft32.com employ small programs called 'download clients' to monetize their free services and traffic. Download clients offer installation of advertised (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') browser extensions together with the chosen software.
Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware risks computer infection with adware or malware including JokeFanatic. Following successful infiltration on Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, JokeFanatic assigns browser settings (default search engine and homepage) to ask.com.
Using ask.com as your default search engine may lead to further computer infections, and therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate JokeFanatic from your Internet browsers.
There are many rogue browser extensions that use bundling as an installation method and are similar to JokeFanatic. Some examples are Cats and Catapults, iWon, and History Boss. None of these applications provide any real value for the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements and enforcing unwanted browser redirects.
Although JokeFanatic poses no direct virus threats, most users are redirected without their consent. If you feel that your browser settings (homepage, new tab URL, and default search engine) have been changed to ask.com without your consent, follow the removal instructions below to uninstall this browser hijacker from your Internet browsers.
