What is BeFrugal?
BeFrugal applications claim to save time and money by enabling the 'Cash Back' function and displaying various coupons and special deals/discounts available on shopping websites. This browser add-on is distributed using a software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of third-party apps together with the chosen software.
For this reason, BeFrugal is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP). Once installed on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox without users' permission, BeFrugal generates unwanted online advertisements including banners, coupons, etc. Users commonly install this plug-in together with the free software downloadable on freeware download websites.
Popular freeware download websites such as download.com, soft32.com, softonic.com, and many others, employ small 'download programs' (also called 'download managers', 'download clients', 'installers', etc.) to monetize their traffic and free services by offering installation of additional programs together with free software.
Although these apps are described as legitimate, they are mostly adware or malware infections. Promoted applications usually generate intrusive online advertisements that lead to bogus websites and track various user information and share it with third-parties.
This behavior may cause further computer infections or serious privacy issues. BeFrugal is not technically a virus or malware, however, it is categorized as a PUP, and therefore, you are advised to uninstall it from your system.
There are many applications with similar or identical behavior to BeFrugal. For example: SpeedCheckApp, Blue Bulletin, and Shop Easy. None of these apps provide any real value for the user - they are developed to generate revenue by the display of ads and sharing collected data with third parties.
To prevent installation of third-party programs, closely analyse each step of the free software download procedure and ensure that no other applications are included.
Furthermore, installation of downloaded software should be performed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' options - this will reveal any concealed applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. If you have installed BeFrugal, read the following removal guide and uninstall this PUP from your system.
