ShopScouter Ads

Also Known As: ShopScouter adware
Type: Adware
Damage level: Medium

What is ShopScouter?

ShopScouter is a bogus browser extension claiming to save time and money by enabling a feature to display coupons and special deals/discounts on shopping websites. Some users may find this add-on legitimate and useful, however, ShopScouter is classed as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).

The developers of this rogue application employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software) to install ShopScouter on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari) without users' permission.

After successful infiltration, ShopScouter generates various intrusive online advertisements, some of which may redirect to dubious websites, thereby exposing your computer to risk of infection.

ShopScouter adware

As with other adware-type applications, ShopScouter collects various software and hardware information relating to Internet browsing, which may be personally identifiable. For instance, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine users' geographic locations), browser type, search queries, websites visited, pages viewed, etc.

Tracking of personally identifiable information can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.

There are hundreds of rogue applications similar or identical to ShopScouter. iShopper, View That Deal, and Coupoon are just some examples from many, none of which (including ShopScouter) provide any of the promised features - they are developed to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads and sharing collected information with third parties.

For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall ShopScouter adware from your system immediately.

Most adware-type applications are distributed using small download programs called 'download managers', 'installers', 'download clients', etc. on freeware download websites including download.com, soft32.com, and softonic.com.

Download managers are employed to monetize these websites' free services and traffic by offering installation of third-party applications together with the chosen software. These applications are described as '100% legitimate and virus-free', however, reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections.

This situation can be avoided by closely observing each step of the free software download procedure and never accepting offers to install additional applications.

Furthermore, programs downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any concealed applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. If you have installed ShopScouter, the following instructions will help you to eliminate this adware from your system.
