Search.newscrawler.com Redirect

Also Known As: NewsCrawler browser hijacker
Damage level: Medium

What is search.newscrawler.com?

The NewsCrawler application claims to allow users to search the Internet for latest news regarding entered keywords - "NewsCrawler is your personal and easily configurable newspaper, which serves as a home page of your browser."

On initial inspection, this app may seem useful, however, NewsCrawler is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and a browser hijacker. This app stealthily infiltrates the system, modifies browser settings (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox), displays ads, and tracks Internet browsing activity. All this is performed without users' permission.

search.newscrawler.com browser hijacker

Once NewsCrawler infiltrates the system, users may encounter various intrusive online advertisements such as links, in-text, targeted video, audio, and other graphical ads. These can lead to malicious sites containing infectious content - clicking them might cause further adware or malware infections.

NewsCrawler assigns the aforementioned browser default search engine, homepage, and new tab URL settings to search.newscrawler.com. In addition, this site installs a number of browser plug-ins and an application that prevents users from reverting these changes.

This significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience, since users are continually redirected to search.newscrawler.com without their consent. This behavior is common amongst browser-hijacking apps. Note that the search.newscrawler.com website redirects to bing.com (a legitimate search engine).

Research also shows that NewsCrawler collects various information relating to users' Internet browsing activity. The types of gathered details include (but are not limited to) IP addresses, operating system and browser type (also browsing details - visited sites, viewed pages, search queries, etc.), and other similar software/hardware information.

The developers of this app (SambaMedia SL) share these details with third party companies, and thus, the presence of NewsCrawler on your system can lead to privacy issues. We strongly advise that you uninstall this browser-hijacking app immediately.

NewsCrawler Terms and Conditions regarding advertising and data collection:

By accessing the Sites and downloading the Content, you hereby grant us permission to display promotional information, advertisements, and offers for third party products or services (collectively "Advertising"). The Advertising may include, without limitation, content, offers for products or services, data, links, articles, graphic or video messages, text, software, music, sound, graphics or other materials or services. The timing, frequency, placement and extent of the Advertising changes are determined in our sole discretion. You further grant us permission to collect and use certain aggregate information in accord with our Privacy Policy.

NewsCrawler has similar characteristics to other browser-hijacking apps such as musixmuze.searchalgo.com, movixmuze.searchalgo.com, cassiopesa.com, etc. This type of app attempts to trick users by claiming to provide useful functionality (supposedly to improve the Internet browsing experience).

In fact, following successful infiltration, these apps merely generate ads, track personal data, and cause unwanted browser redirects. Browser hijackers such as NewsCrawler are designed solely to generate revenue for the developers - they provide no real value for users.

How did NewsCrawler install on my computer?

NewsCrawler has an official download website, however, it is also distributed as a 'bundle' with other software.

Developers often hide PUPs within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' download/installation settings. Unaware of this, many users skip this section. This usually leads to inadvertent installation of rogue applications - by rushing the download and installation processes, users expose their systems to risk of infection.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Rogue applications are often concealed. Therefore, you should closely analyze each step of the download and installation processes, which should be performed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any hidden rogue PUPs and allow you to cancel them.
