Search.getmaps.co Redirect

Also Known As: Get Maps browser hijacker
Damage level: Medium

What is search.getmaps.co?

Get Maps is a deceptive application that supposedly provides users with access to various maps, and allows them to search the Internet.

On initial inspection, this application may seem legitimate, however, due to rogue behavior, Get Maps is categorized as a potentially unwanted browser-hijacking program (PUP). As well as stealth infiltration without users' permission, Get Maps generates intrusive online advertisements, causes unwanted browser redirects, and tracks Internet browsing activity.

search.getmaps.co browser hijacker

After system infiltration, Get Maps assigns the Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox default search engine, new tab URL, and homepage browser settings to search.getmaps.co. Furthermore, this app automatically reassigns settings to this website when attempts are made to change them. Thus, users are unable to restore browsers to their previous states.

This significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience, since they are continually redirected to search.getmaps.co without consent. Furthermore, Get Maps delivers various intrusive online ads that often conceal underlying website content. This further diminishes the Internet browsing experience.

Get Maps collects various information relating to Internet browsing activity. The information often contains personal details that developers of Get Maps share with third parties who misuse personal information to generate revenue.

Therefore, the presence of an information-tracking app on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall Get Maps PUP immediately.

There are tens of potentially unwanted programs identical to Get Maps (for example, My Driving Directions XP, My Shopping XP, and My Sports XP).

All offer different functionality, and yet, have identical behavior. Rather than providing the features promised, apps such as Get Maps cause unwanted browser redirects, gather browsing-related data and deliver intrusive advertisements. These PUPs are designed to generate revenue for the developers and deliver no significant value for users.

How did search.getmaps.co install on my computer?

This application has an official download website, however, it is also distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software/apps) and, therefore, many users install this application inadvertently, since they do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software.

Apps such as Get Maps are concealed within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings section. By rushing these processes and skipping most/all steps, rogue software is often installed inadvertently.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

To prevent this situation, be attentive during the download and installation processes. Closely analyze each step using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Furthermore, all additionally-included programs should be cancelled, since it is highly probable that bundled software will be malicious.
