What is AppTrailers?

AppTrailers is a rogue application claiming to allow users to watch movie trailers directly from the desktop. On initial inspection, AppTrailers may seem legitimate and useful, however, this app displays intrusive online advertisements and monitors Internet browsing activity.

Furthermore, developers distribute it using a deceptive software marketing method called "bundling". For these reasons, AppTrailers is classed as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).

AppTrailers adware

AppTrailers uses a 'virtual layer' to generate pop-up, banner, coupon, interstitial, and other similar ads. The virtual layer enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, ads that do not originate from users' visited websites and often conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.

In addition, these ads often redirect to malicious websites - even accidental clicks can result in high-risk adware or malware infections. Another downside of AppTrailers is information tracking. This PUP continually records IP addresses, URLs visited, queries entered into search engines, pages viewed, and other similar browsing-related information.

The data might be personally identifiable and shared by developers with cooperating third parties (who generate revenue by misusing personal details). Thus, the presence of an information-tracking app such as AppTrailers on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to eliminate AppTrailers from your system immediately.

AppTrailers is regular adware and, thus, shares many similarities with hundreds of other potentially unwanted programs such as Ad Expert Browser, LoadLoader, Content Protector, and TwitterTime

Research shows that all adware offers certain features to supposedly improve the web browsing experience, however, these claims are simply attempts to attempt to give the impression of legitimacy. Apps such as AppTrailers provide little to no value for regular users.

Adware is designed only to generate revenue for the developers - it simply collects personal data and delivers intrusive online advertisements.

How did AppTrailers install on my computer?

Developers promote AppTrailers via an official download website and a deceptive software marketing method called "bundling" (stealth installation of third party applications with regular software). Developers hide bundled programs within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings of the download/installation processes.

Rushing these processes and skipping most/all steps often leads to inadvertent installation of potentially unwanted programs such as AppTrailers.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Potentially unwanted programs are distributed using the bundling method. Therefore, analyze each step of the download/installation procedures using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Furthermore, cancel all additionally-included programs and offers to download/install them. The key to computer safety is caution.
