Theadgateway.com Redirect

Also Known As: theadgateway.com pop-up
Type: Adware
Damage level: Medium

What is theadgateway.com?

Identical to safe-redirections.com, data1rtb.com, and n282adserv.com, and many others, theadgateway.com is a rogue website designed to cause redirects to other suspicious sites.

Note is that users often visit theadgateway.com inadvertently - they are redirected by potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) that infiltrate systems during installation of regular software (the "bundling" method). In addition, they deliver intrusive advertisements and continually record various information relating to users' Internet browsing activity.

theadgateway.com adware

These PUPs open a new browsing window and redirect to theadgateway.com, which, in turn, redirects to another website. The end point (a suspicious website) might contain malicious content. Therefore, redirects to theadgateway.com can result in high-risk adware or malware infections.

Another downside is display of intrusive advertisements. PUPs deliver pop-up, coupon, banner, and other similar ads that conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the browsing experience. They might also lead to malicious websites and even accidental clicks can result in further computer infections.

Furthermore, browsing activity is monitored, since PUPs continually gather IP addresses, URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other information that might be personally identifiable. This collected data is later shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

Therefore, the presence of information-tracking apps might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, uninstall PUPs immediately.

The Internet is full of PUPs, all of which are virtually identical. By offering various 'useful features', they attempt to give the impression of legitimacy, however, these programs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers, whilst regular users receive no significant value.

PUPs cause unwanted redirects (thereby increasing traffic of certain websites), deliver intrusive advertisements (via the "Pay Per Click" advertising model), and continually gather various user-system information (which is later sold to third parties).

How did adware install on my computer?

As mentioned above, developers proliferate PUPs by employing a deceptive marketing method called "bundling". Developers know that users often rush the download/installation processes and skip steps. Therefore, information regarding modification of browser settings is hidden within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of rogue programs.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

To prevent infiltration of PUPs, be very cautious when downloading and installing software. Carefully analyze each step using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and decline offers to download/install additional applications. The key to computer safety is caution.
