VOTRE ORDINATEUR A ÉTÉ BLOCKÉ Scam
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is VOTRE ORDINATEUR A ÉTÉ BLOCKÉ?
"VOTRE ORDINATEUR A ÉTÉ BLOCKÉ" is a fake error message displayed by a malicious website, which users visit inadvertently - they are redirected by various potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) distributed using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling".
As well as causing redirects, PUPs deliver intrusive online advertisements and continually record various user-system information.
After visiting the aforementioned website, users are presented with a fake pop-up error message claiming that the system is infected and, for this reason, personal data (logins/passwords, banking details, etc.) is at risk. It is also stated that closing the pop-up will disable access to the computer.
To resolve this issue, victims are encouraged to call a telephone number ("01 82 88 82 58") provided. They are then supposedly guided through the malware removal process. The entire text is in French (usually, these pop-ups contain English text) and, therefore, it is safe to assume that cyber criminals target users from France.
Bear in mind, however, that the "VOTRE ORDINATEUR A ÉTÉ BLOCKÉ" error is fake - merely a scam. Cyber criminals attempt to scare and trick victims into calling and paying for services that are not required. Therefore, you should never call the telephone number. You can remove this error simply by closing the web browser.
PUPs deliver coupon, banner, pop-up, and other similar advertisements that conceal underlying website content, thereby significantly diminishing the browsing experience. In addition, some lead to malicious websites - clicking them is risky and can result in high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, PUPs gather Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, mouse/keyboard activity, geo-locations, and other data that might contain personal details.
This information is shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse personal details to generate revenue. Therefore, the presence of data-tracking apps can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Remove all PUPs immediately from your system.

Although "VOTRE ORDINATEUR A ÉTÉ BLOCKÉ" is in French, it shares many similarities with dozens of other fake error messages such as, for example, Security Warning, Error Virus - Trojan Backdoor Hijack, and WARNING! Your Windows Has Been Blocked.
As with VOTRE ORDINATEUR A ÉTÉ BLOCKÉ, these errors also claim that the system is damaged in certain ways, however, their purpose is identical: to generate revenue for the developers. Therefore, ignore these errors. PUPs share many similarities. By offering various 'useful features', they attempt to give the impression of legitimacy.
In fact, PUPs are also designed only to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than providing any significant value for regular users, they cause unwanted redirects, display advertisements, and continually record sensitive data.
How did adware install on my computer?
Developers proliferate PUPs by employing a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" - stealth installation of third party software with regular programs. Users often rush the download/installation processes and skip steps.
Aware of this, developers hide bundled apps within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings of the download/installation processes. Therefore, skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of rogue programs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent system infiltration by PUPs, be very cautious during the download and installation processes. Select the "Custom/Advanced" settings and carefully analyze each process. In addition, decline offers to download/install additional applications and cancel those already included.
